The very tardy manner in which
many of our subscribers have treated
our request for a settlement of their
past due subscription dues impresses
upon us very forcibly the necessity
for ehsnging to s strictly cssh-in.sd-
vsnee basis. As we pointed out in
previous issues, the price for news
paper stock has advanced more than
100 per cent in the past feef months
For instance, as late as last Spring,
print paper could be bought as cheap
as |65 a ton. On September 27th the
quotation waa 654 cents a pound, or
$180 a ton. TW'manufacturers say
that in all probability the price will
go to 10 cents by the first of January.
It is manifestly impossible to con
tinue at the old rate and with the old
hit-and-miss methods of collections.
Not only The People, but every news
paper in the country that ia not on a
cash-in-advance basis, loses hundreds
of dollars annually by the failure of
subscribers to pay their dues prompt
ly. Frankly, we have stood about ss
much of that loss as we can reasonab
ly stand, and afterthe first of January,
1917, all subscribers who are not paid
in advance will be dropped from our
list. This does not mean, however,
that their accounts will be automati
cally settled, as we intend to uses every
legitimate means to collect them
We wish to call the attention of our
readers to the agreement between the
publishers of The People and The
Sentinel, which is printed on the front
page of this issue. Their action is
merely one of "safety first” and is be-
'ing put into effect by practically every
newspaper in the country. You will
save both yourselves and the publish
ers considerable trouble and annoy-,
ance if you will look at the label of
your paper right now and if you are
in arfears send us check or money
order by return mail for an amount
sufficient to settle past dues and at
least several months in advance. Re
member, you can get the paper now
for $1.00 a year, limited to 5 years in
advance, and that after Jan. 1, 1917,
the price will be $1.50 a year in ad
vance to all—absolutely no favorites,
it matters not who or what you are.
In all fairness, won’t you give this
matter your attention right now?
With so many ignorant, irresponsi
ble negroes buying automobiles it be
hooves the officers of the law to en
force the laws against speeding more
stringently than ever. Unless they
are made keep their^speed within
the bounds of safety, other users of
the public roads will take the law iri
their own hands.
Honestly, now, can you imagine
“Coley” addressing a crowd of ne
groes and calling them “my friends”?
But, then, as the negro bishop ex
plained, all that blood and thunder
talk on the stump was merely to tickle
the ears of the voters and to catch
their votes.
We see by the papers that a prize
is being offered at one of the county
fairs in this State for the ugliest girl
or woman driving a certain popular-
priced automobile. We certainly would
hate to be one of the judges. .1.
What about our suggestion to put
an age limit on the drivers of auto-
