THURSDAY, AUGUST 8RD, 1916.
The Bleasitee Started It.
At the campaign meeting in Or
angeburg Friday, Mr. C. L. Blease
was “heckled" by the crowd and af
ter attempting to speak for only six
minutes refused to continue, prefer
ring, it seems, to make whatever po
litical capital he can out of an effort
on the part of the Manning Men to
“howl him down.”
But—
The friends of Governor Manning
WERE NOT THE FIRST TO IN
DULGE IN THE DISGRACEFUL
PRACTICE OF “HECKLING.” The
in Saturday's issue of Ihe
and Democrat, of Orangeburg,
stained the following sentence: “A
minority of about 2M were
sad whoa Manning
THEY RECK LED HIM CON8ID1
ABLY AT FIRST, hot the gores
sad the tatermptioae
Yea, Coleetine, there
folks in this vale of tours who would
IwS-GooesmamJlu
personal emissary of\the Sultan of
Bulu jf a certain demagogic politician
told them such is the case.
An attempt was made at Orange
burg to “heckle" Governor Manning,
who, unlike onrnof his opponents, is
not “feather-legged” and persisted
until the interruptions ceased.
Our idea of the height of imagina
tion is for a little negro boy to push
a soap box on wheels around town
and imagine he’s driving a Super-
Six.
As a political factor in the present
gubernatorial race, Candidate C. L,
BleaSe has gone “where the wood
bine twineth.”
Why?
Why havg two primaries when an
s candidate for
a second tend? /
MUNICIPAL PRIMARY ELECTION
For Mayor.
I hereby announce myself a candi
date for re-election to the office of
Mayor of Barnwell, subject to the
rules of the ^.municipal Democratic
primary election.
J. Emile Harley.
For Alderman.
I hereby announce myself a candi
date for the office of Alderman of
Barnwell, subject to the rules of the
municipal Democratic primary elec
tion.
P. M. Buckingham.
Continuing, the report says
“Chairman Moss made several efforts
to interrupt Blease and straighten the
crowd out, but the ex-Governor
willjng to take what political
he could get out of not
tad ceased his efforts after
only six minutes speaking. He waa
as he was leering the
!h all probability an attempt will
be amde by the supporters of Mr.
Blease to make political capital out
ef the Orangeburg ms sting, and this
artioie is written merely to keep the
record straight The People does not
nphold the men who were guilty of
so discourteous an act as “heckling"
a candidate, but it must be admitted
that they were merely paying the
Bleaaeitcs with their own coin.
One of the weakest charges against
Governor Manning, aside from charg
ing the present administration with
“lawisssnsis," is that the Governor
“raised” the salary of the superin
tendent at the State hospital for the
insane. Governor Manning did NOT
raise the superintendent's salary. He
didn’t have that power. The first
year he paid the deficit out of HIS
OWN POCKET, and the legislature,
seeing the excellent results, volun
tarily increased the salary to $6,000.
But even if the Governor had in
creased the salary of Dr. Williams,
who saved the State of South Caro
lina $34,000 in the first year, would
not that have been good business ?
These so-called “charges” would be
laughable if it were not true that a
crtain class of people believe—or pre
tend to believe—them.
One of the candidates for Governor
professes to be a “nigger-hater,”
But—
That same candidate, when he was
Governor, persistently pardoned his
negro chauffer for speeding through
the streets of Columbia and THREAT
ENED to “put on” another rural po
liceman in Richland County every* *
time said negro was arrested.
For the sake of argument, let’s ad
mit that the Manning administration
is “lawless.” Now then—
Will the supporters of Candidate C.
L. Blease explain why Governor Man
ning wns HISSED by the lawless ele
ment at the Charleston meeting?
If one of the candidates for Gov
ernor is the profound “nigger-hater’
that he professes to be, let him ex
plain (if be can) why he pardoned
and paroled MORE THAN ONE
THOUSAND NEGRO CONVICTS
during his incumbency in office.
- la it out of order to recall the fact
that Judge Ira B. Jones was
down” at nearly all of the
» the campaign of Uli ?
