X cook prepares the food for three of the paupers. An Able-bodied nefcro '^o- man stays at the almshouse and looks after her blind husband and crippled son. The following; copy of the weekly ration Riven to each pauper by the superintendent and purchased by the county was made from a list on the wall of the small.house used a» a commissary:’ Bacon, 3 lbs.;^meair8 lbs.: rice, 2% lbs.: (or Rrits^)3 lbs.: flour, 3 lbs.; sugar, 1 lb.; coffee, V6 lb.; lard, lbs.; kerosene oil, 1 qt.; matches, 1 box; one plug of tobacco, salt "and soap. The superintendent said that'he did not know how often the paupers bathed themselves. Two galvanised tubs are provided for them. Their clothes are washed and boiled every two weeks. The bedding is washed “when it needs it” and aired every week. No religious services are held at the almshouse. Special Notes. _ The superintendent has taken some steps to improve the appearance of the almshouse and grounds, including grading the road where it goes over a bank and planting a few trees. The superintendent permits the paupers to cultivate small vegetable gardens next to their houses inside the alms house yard. This is a most excellent practice as it gives the inmates some employment and adds to the sum total of their interest in life. IV. Recommendations. 1. The houses occupied by the pau- pera are badly in need of general re pairs. It will be well, though, to de fer making these repairs until it can be seen whether or not it is advisable tb fbrnr efsewheTe than in Aarnwed a district almshouse in which the Barn well paupers and paupers from neigh boring counties can be cared for. The almshouse district in this section of the State might well include Barnwell, Bamberg and Orangeburg counties. Prom the standpoint of railroad fa cilities, Denmark would appear to be the ideal location for an almshouse in , a district embracing Barnwell, Bam berg and Orangeburg counties. How ever, the Board will make a more thorough study of the situation, m eluding costs and pauper population, before recommending the establish ment of a district almshouse. 2. Although in view of the possibil ity of forming a district almshouse it is not advisable to make at present the repairs to the paupers’ houses, still the adoption of the suggestions below immediately is urged. a. One of the houses for the in mates should be converted into i kitchen and dining room for the pau pers, the white paupers using one room as a dining room while the ne gro paupers use the kitchen for that purpose. b. The county should hire a cook who should prepare the food for all paupers. It is-believed that thb em ploying of a cook will result in a sav ing of supplies which will more than pay for her hire besides giving the paupers more palatable food than they can prepare for themselves on the open fireplaces in their rooms. c. The superintendent should keep a record of all the paupers committed to the almshouse. This record should include the following facts: the names, race, sex and age of each pau per; the dates on which they were committed or discharged; whether they are married, single or widowed; „ the nature of any physical complaint from which they are suffering; wheth er, they are mentally deficient, epilep tic or insane. d. The county physician should give \every pauper a physical examination as goon as possible after commitment to the almshouse. e. The figupers should be required to bathe thefnselves at least once a week. Their clothing should be washed once a week/ The sheets on their beds shhould be w^s^ed once a " week. ^ Chain Gang Notice.
