In the last two years there hay*
been completed in the United States
twelve fourteen-inch coast deferise
guns of the most modern and power
ful type, each with a range of more
than twenty-two thousand yards and
each firing a projectile weighing ap
proximately fifteen hundred pounds.
Of these twelve guns none has been
mounted or will be mounted In any
of the coast fortifications of the
United States proper. Nine of them
have already been placed In the for
tifications guarding Manila, Hono
lulu, and the Pacific entrance to the
Panama Canal.
The last three of the twelve are
to go to the fortifications of Manila.
They are already in transit or ready
to ship. Of th© twelve guns five
have niready been mounted at Manila
and two each at Honolulu and on the
Pacific end of th© Canal. Th© addi
tion of the three guns now ordered
to Manila will give those fortifica
tions eight guns of the fourteen-inch
calibre in additional to several com
plete batteries of twelve-inch guns
and twelve-inch howitzers, making
that *>ort, defensively speaking, a
second Port Arthur in the Kay-Fast.

Portland, and when the Eighth Com
pany leaves Fort Williams on Friday
to come to New York, the shortage

escaped from the region In which the
cavalry forces of the American puni
tive expedition are cperatlng. Offi
cial advices failed to either verify or
deny the reports.—
The expeditionary commander told
of difficulties experienced as a re
sult of the scarcity of reliable guides
and misinformation given the Intelli
gence officers in villages through
which Villa and his followers had
passed.
Whlch-way Villa has gone Is large
ly a question for Gen. Pershing’s
scouts to answer. It was pointed out
at Gen. Funston’s headquarters that
once the trail was picked up the
troops would resume the chase fur
ther Into the Interior, although It
was realized that this second phase
of the punitive expedition’s work was
far more difficult than the first.
It is not improbable. It was said,
that more troops than those already
In Mexico will be required. The
topography of the country south of
Guerrero Is such that successful pur
suit can be conducted only by a wide
deploying of forces and the utiliza
tion of a large force of the Infantry.
It was pointed out that ths further
the troops penetrated Into Mexico,
the greater will be the necessity for
strengthening the lines of communi
cation.

Following up sharply their cap
ture of the village of Haucourt, in
the Avoeou.t-Bethincourt salient
northwest of Verdun,, the Germans
have shifted the line of their attack
slightly to the east, driving against
the lines between Bethincourt nnd
Chattancourt and penetrating a first
line trench there.
The locality is In the vicinity of
Dead MaVs Hill, whre Germans and
French hiwe been battling at inter
vals for weeks for control of domi
nating positions. Paris declares that
the Germans were driven by a coun
ter attack from the greeter part f
the captured position and that they

In Kent has caused the death or in
jury of two hundred persons,. It Was
announced officially in London. The
following Britishv statement u;as
given out:
"The ministry of munitions re

the week-end a serious fire broke out
In a powder factory, which led to a
series of explosions In the' works.
The fir© was purely accidental. . It
was discovered at midday and the
last of the explosions took place
