ORGANIZE AGAINST TRE FLY.

'Quick Action in Fly-Swaftin*:
: — V '
RoalizinK the necessity cl
the people to a realization of
Rees lurking in the apparently,'''no-
cent house-fly, Miss Nellie R.\Kay,
County Agent Home Demonstration
Work, has prepared the following a'
tide for the readers of- The People:'
“The early fl^’s the one to swat, *
It comes, before the Weather’s hot, ,
And sits around and fries its legs,
And lays at least tern million eggs.
And every egg' will bring a fly
To, drive us crazy by and by,”
a - ' -v
And because it is now time to be
gin an active campaign against the
too common “house-fly,” I am writing
to draw this fact to the attention of
our people.
This subject is not very nice from
an ethical standpoint, but since it af
fects us so vitally, it behooves us t°
stop and consider it very carefully.
Nor must w*- stop’at that point, 1'Ut
put the knowledge gained to some
use, or in other words, begin our war
fare against “Mr. Fly.”
^ . 1
For many years this common pest
was known as the “house-fly,” but in
later years scientists changed his
name to “typhoid fly s ” for they found
that jie carried these germs on his
feet.
“A little fly played in a dusty street
And typhoid germs got on his feet,
Next day he walked on sugar and
bread— . . ^ ,
The fsiy who ate it is now'in bed.
If folks learn to read, but d<vnot rare,
What’s the use of school-house there.
If the fly that plays in the gutter
Wipes his feet on the hrrad and but
ter?” •
Not only doe* he carry typhoid
^germ* no his feet, fait He also <ar- r
ries other diseases. Many disease*
affecting •mall children have l»een
traced |o his door.
The fly then i* our enemy and as-
such we must fight him. Ami he is
not so strong but that he may t>e over
come. “Fare" and "perseverance" are
the weapons with which to fight him.
Now flies do not travel very fag,
hence it follows that tlie flies that
troulde you, Mrs. Housewife, were
raised on your own premises, unless
you live in t°*n and your neat *|oor
neighUir is careless —or shsll we say
“lazy?”
Realizing the danger coming from
the fly, let’s l>egin now to exterminate
him. First destroy the breeding
places in the stables. Sunlight ia
death to many germs -likewise it des
troys the larvae of tho fly. Use plen
ty of Time around the premises.
In spite of these precaution*, we
may have flies. Then place fly-traps
near the stable*. These may easily
lie made from.iwtrel hoops and wire
screen*. The Farm I *emon>t ration
Agent or Home Demonstration Agent
will Ih’ glad to assist you m giving di
rections for making these traps. The
trap is especially effective in its
work in the town on the street and is
a g«Msl object lesson for other folks,
for many seeing the t r i*P at w *k,
will go home and make owe for use on
their own premises.
The fly—or shall we gi\e his full
name?—the “typhoid fly” is on the
' exterior of our homes. We lock or
bar our doors to prevent the thief’s
entrance; therefore, we must bar this
greater enemy from entering our
home*. So we find screens very ef
fective. If you cannot afford wire
screens—and they are not expensive
—then use “mosquito petting.—,.Y*S
the cloth. It will not last but one sea
son, but is cheap and far better than
no screen.
And just a word to the large land
owner who has many tenants on his
farms. Can’t you assist these people
to make their homes more sanitary
by putting in screens ? Humanity de
mands that we must “help one anoth
er.”
•In spite of these precautions, flies
will slip in. Then use the “fly swat-,
ter,” “tanglefoot,” “Daisy fly killer”
and other devices. ,
There are Several towns entirely ,
free from flies. They offered the boys
a certain sum of money for ^very quart
of flies killed. Members of the Civic
League, can’t you try some such plan
in your town ? Let’s begin now and
work unceasingly, using as our weap
ons, “Care and Perseverance.” We
can’t give up the fight, for twelve gen
erations of flies may develop in one
summer.
“Napoleon was a conqueror and had
the world aghast,
But still he met his Waterloo and was
exiled at last.
For many years old General Fly to
victory led his hosts,
From “garbage can to careless folk he
spread disease. Jus fry ft, - _
n be an exile, too, for now
