THE BARNWELL PEOPLE Entered at the post office at Barnwell, S. C., as second-class matter. JOHM W. HOLMES ' 1840-1912 B. P. DAVIES, Editor and Proprietor. THURSDAY, MARCH 23, 1916. The People has heard several com plaints of late to the effect that, while the price of bacon has advanced, there is comparatively little market for the droves of hotfs that have been raised in Barnwell County. . The farmers took a step in the ripht direction when they declared their emancipation from the all-cotton plan, but unless they are encouraped to continue it is only a question of a very short time be fore they will be compelled to return to cotton farming exclusively. If it is profitable, to maintain great packing house 3 -' n the West, why wouldn’t a centrally situated enter prise of that kind pay good dividends? Thousands of hogs have been raised in South Carolina in the past several months and a packing house in this State would provide a ready market for them. It would also mean lower prices to the consumer, as a consider able saving on transportation charges would be effected. The People hopes that some action will be taken on this suggestion. The writer has been asked a num ber of times of. late for his opinion as to who will be the successful candidate in the race for Governor. Frankly, we dont know. There is no doubt but that the entrance of Solici tor Cooper has complicated mattera and there is no denying the fart that ha has a strong following in the State, •lie will draw many supporters from the ranks of both Bleasites and anti- Bleasites. Our opinion is that either Cooper or Manning will be elected, with the chances in favor of the latter, as it has been an immemorial custom to give a Governor a second term, if Mr. Cooper is defeated this year h« will be forever out of the running as a factor in State politice. ❖❖❖❖❖❖❖❖❖❖❖❖❖ HUGGINS DRUG STORE I OFFERS & TO t FIVE DOLLARS IN GOLD FREE * PEOPLE READERS If You Can Supply the Missing Words in This Advertisement Get it at Huggins Drug Store and you .find that.___ pur- chased-i.. up to quality. prices means. quality prices are prices for ..drugs.... to remember '■ /•' ‘ ' •..■ . C. of the leading buaineaa men of lark Hill have organised a 1100- 000 Are insurance company to solve the problem caused by the withdrawal of foreign cam panic* from Una State. Only local riaka will be written. Sim ilar organisations in every county in the Slate would no doubt bring the recalcitrant companies to time. It is absurd to allow them to make a sov ereign ■tate buckle to their wishes. If necessary. South Carolina should organise an insurance department and write the risks for the people of the State. Th#. we believe, is now being done in one of the Western States. Mr. E. B. McSweeney. editor of thp Hampton Guardian, and a number of business men of Beaufort have per fected plans for publishing “The Beaufort Leader.” The paper will lie edited in Beaufort and printed in the Guardipn office at Hampton About The People has accepted the chal lenge of an esteemed subscriber to publish an article from The Iconoc last. Our correspondent seems to think that our “brand of neutrality" docs not permit us to publish any thing in favor of “the other side.” For fua benefit and all other German sympathizers we wifi say that we are not anti-German, but, as Bob Gon zales has aptly phrased it, we ARK anti-Hohenzollern and anti-Hapsburg —and anti-anything else that threat ens the peace of the United Sates of America. The Herald is edited in Hampton and printed in the office of The Beaufort Gazette. Unless all signs fail, there is to be a bi-county newspaper -light. * • We tyould suggest to the farmers who have more home-cured meat than they can use themselves that they in sert a small advertisement in their home paper. There is always a de mand among town people for "coun try hams,” etc., and it would be pos sible for an enterprising farmer 'to work up a paying busyiess at -very little cost; —o— The weekly newspaper is certainly at a disadvantage. For instance, we wrote a short article' this week about a packing house in this State and be fore the slugs were cold Orangeburg announced that the enterprise will be located in that city. Much political capital is being made out of the fact that Governor Man ning sighed the Laney-Odcm bill. The act was passed by the representa tives of the people. Why not put at least a part of .the blame on them? There is an automoblie on the mark et that uses a magnet for transmitting power to the rear wheels. Autos are magnetic enough already to attract buyers without making them .more so. Such terms as “with the American Army,” “via wireless to Columbus, N. M.,” “name deleted by censor.” etc., give dispatches from Mexico the savor of real war news. The manner in which some men look It a woman is an insult. .Win. MoNAB. _.
