An
Excellent
~ a
Idea.
That was an excellent sujjffMtion
contained in the last issue of the Wal-
terboro Press and Standard—that the
editors and publishers of newspapers
in the so-called,’Mow country” get to
gether and 'organize u press booster
club for the purpose of putting this
section of the State “on the map.”
We heartily second what Brother
Smoak has to say and move that he
take whatever steps may be necessary
to organize such a club, or association
—at the same time assuring him of our
feeble support.
As he points out, the papers of the
Piedmont are forever boosting their
section, while little if anything is ever
said about the lower tier of countie,s.
Brother Smoak’s idea is an excellent
one and is well worth the serious con
sideration of his fellow publishers.
P. S. Since the above was written,
the editor of The People has received
an invitation from the Beaufort Cham
ber of Commerce to attend a meeting
in that city on the evening of March
17th for the purpose of carrying out
the suggestion made in the Press and
Standard. Such quick action is com
mendable and shows that the “low
country” is not so slow after all. Un
less something unforeseen prevents,
we expect to attend the Beaufort
meeting.
We wish to commend the town coun
cil of Barnwell for its action in buy
ing several hundred feet of standard
hose to be used in fighting future fires
in this city. This is a step in the
right direction and we sincerely hope
that it will be followed up until the
town is provided with adequate fire
protection. As we have pointed out
before, the proper sort of fire-fight
ing apparatus will reduce the present
insurance rate enough to take care of
any increase m taxation necessary to
purchase same.
What say you, friends?
Watson Bell, of the York News,
numbers The Square Deal, a news
paper published in the Kansas peni
tentiary, among his exchanges, and
he is spparently so much impressed
with the articles appearing therein
that it is very improbable that he will
ever grace the easy chair in the oflice
of such a publication.
The Aiken Standard has recently
installed a linotype. We congratu
late Editor Duncan on his progress-
iveneas. His paper is not quite a
year old and already ranks among the
leading weeklies in the State.
Editor of The People:—
In his recent address, given at the
HHch 3ch<ff>l Auditorium, Lieutenant-
Governor Bethea, among other things,
said that he had heard rtiore expres
sions of hate in England towards the
Germans^han he had in Germany to
ward the English. Upon hearing the
statement the present writer wonder
ed whether that might not be due to
the greater familiarity of the Lieut.-
Governor with the English language,
by which he would catch more of the
passing expressions of sentiment in
England than he would in Germapy.
But however that may be, as an evi
dence that all of the peoples of the
Entente powers are not animated by
the_ sentiments expressed in the fa
mous German “Song of Hate,” it is
refreshing to read the following order
which, according to “The Outlook,” is
reported to have been issued to the
school teachers of Hungary:
“The Royal Hungarian Minister for
Education requests all teachers to pay
special attention fn the coming term
to the respect and honor due to our
enemies; that no hatred or contempt
should enter the minds of the children
against the brave men with whom their
fathers are in deadly combat; and that
hate or contempt is not to be cultiva-
teii/ia the youthful minds.” -

And what has become of the old-
fashioned editor who was wont to re
mark that “winter lingers in the lap
of spring?”
Remember the old Indian sign:
Don’t plant corn until the oak leaf is
as large as a squirrel’s ear.
