Prof. W. W. Hart, of the Galilee
School, is to be congratulated upon the
success of his school entertainment on
the 22nd ult.- in celebration of the
birthday of George Washington. The
performance of his pupils indicated
careful and persistent training by an
accomplished instructor, such as Prof.
Hart is. The school room was filled
to overflowing by patrons and school
children, and the entertainment was
also very much enjoyed by Messrs. G.
Hr Bates, J. K. Snelling, R. A. Ellis
and Thos. M. Boulware, of Barnwell.
These gentlemen also made short, ap
propriate talks.

On Friday afternoon Mrs. R. C
Kirkland entertained seven tables at
bridge. A profusion of pink and white
carnations were used in the decora
tions. Mrs. If. D. Calhoun made the
highest score in a number of inter
esting games and was awarded a pair
of silk hose. The consolation prixe,
box of dainty handkerchiefs, wras
cut by Mrs. R. A. Deason. A delirious
salad course and coffee, followed by
ice cream and cake, were served.

A negro, who was identified from
papers found in his pocket as Ed
Smith, was shot and killed Friday
night at Pqtte.rson’s Old Mill by J. M.
MaVley, L.[B. Brown and B. M. Wall.
From what can be learned here, Smith
hdd been raiding the hen rrfosts in
that section for some time, and that
several days ago his camp W’as dis
covered in the swamp. The above
named men laid in wait for Tiim Fri-
day nii-llt and when he disregarded i
command to halt, they fired on him.
He is saidjfirhave had several chick
ens and his pockets full of eggs and
rice when-killed. The jury of inquest
rendered a verdict of justifiable homi
cide in' accordance with the above
statement of facts. ,
A number of receipts from merch
ants in Spartanburg and Sumter were
-found in the negro’s pockets.
One of the most delightful bridge
parties of the season was enjoyed by a
number of ladies Monday afternoon
at the lovely suburban home of Mrs.
J. W. Patterson. There were six-tab
les. After playing a number of
games, the high score prize, a bottle
of toilet water, was awarded to Mrs.
S. B. Moseley. Miss Antley cut the
consolation prize, a dainty crepe de
chine collar. An appetizing salad
course, quail on toast and coffee were
served.
