The New Year.
Will the New Year bring peace?
Peace in Europe will be the great
est gift the new year can bring the
world. The armies of the Allies and
the Teutons have been locked in bat
tle so long that the world has be-
come almost callous. Every day we
have read in the news dispatches ac
counts of horrible fighting. Today
forty thousand men were wiped out.
Yesterday whole battalions were
decimated. The day before thous^
ands of men were caught in a trap
and killed. '' Reports state that Ger
many’s list of killed totals over 2,-
000,0001 Beautiful cities and price
less works of art have been razed.
Helpless women and children have
been driven by the enemy from their
homes and starved or thrown on the
.mercy of the charitable. No longer
are we affected by the horror of
these dispatches. Our minds have
refused to grasp the trepiendousness
of it and we read the war news with
hardly more of a thrill than we get
from a sensational murder.
Solent dispatches from Europe
have emphasized the peace note.
German Socialists, apparently, are p] Qrr j e
demanding that something be* done to Florrie
end the slaughter. Austria likewise
is ready for peace—in all probabili
ty has been for some time. It is not
unlikely that France and England,
despite their assertions to the con
trary, would be amenable if proper
terms could be obtained. The neutral
world is crying for peace. Will the
New Year bring it?
Nineteen sixteen will hold much
for the United States in the way of
prosperity and progress. We have
reached a period of construction
which will begin this year. Many se
rious problems are before the people
for solution, and the tendency is te
ignore radicalism and to concentrate
our efforts an a safe and sane policy.
But of all the gifts which the New
Year may have in store for us, the
greatest would be peace in Europe.
Deep blue eyes, the coquette; gray
eyas, keen intelligence; green eyi
jealousy; black eyes, intensely loving
nature, and brown eyes, a kind, hap
py temperament. Eyes which appekr
impressive and interesting and sud
denly flash forth into clear light de
note a loving nature and a deep un
derstanding of trouble or sorrow
Eyes which are always inquisitive,
yet, when they look at a person, seem
suddenly to become kind and warm,
are not to be trusted too far. They
belong to the self-seeker.

One of the best New Year’s reso
lutions we know is for all subscribers
to “resolute” to pay their dues—and
then do it.
The Bamberg Herald is the firsit
weekly paper in the State in which
we have noticed a candidate’s card.
He wants to be Clerk of Court. -
In the fleet of life, the flagship is
smiles; giggles are only a breeze
that pushes the ship along.
Flatter a woman’s taste, then
can safely criticise her opinions.

1-Winter Quarter-Off
Sale of Clothing and Furnishings
****•■'* * .1 * #
Coat Suits and Dresses.
We announce today the beginning
of our Mid-Winter Quarter Off Sale.
As everybody in this vicinity knows,
these sales are real events with us.
They offer very great money-saving
opportunities too, for anyone who needs
or will later need, high-grade clothing
and furnishings and who has the fore
thought to buy them immediately.
This year there is a special inducement. .
Owing to the war, the foreign demands
for woolens of all kinds has created an
unparalleled condition in the American
market. There is a tremendous scarcity \
of raw wool in this country now, and
the scarcity is daily growing more acute.
Nobody knows where the prices will
be another season. But certainly they
will be higher.1 1
