page 1177, VoL 1, Code of Laws 1912, a
part of which is giyefi below:
"No per diem shall be paid to any
witness w|(o is in receipt of a salary or
per diem compensation from the State,
or any county, town or city thereof,
and in no case shall any witness receive
more than five cents per. mile for, every
mile actually traveled, or more than
fifty cents per diem, though testifying
in more eases than one."

FAIRFAX SOCIAL NEWS.
Mrs. W. M. UgbtMy Entertained a Num
ber ot Friends.
Fairfax, Dec. 6.-Mrs. W. M. Light-
sey entertained a few friends recently
at a five-course Poinsetta supper. The
color scheme of red, white and green
was carried out in the decorations.
Those invited were: Misses Marga
ret DuRant, Jessie Whatley, Epting,
Stallings, Maude Barber, Lena Ham
mond, Alma Knight and Virginia Du
rant; Mesdames J. F. Lightsey, G. D.
Sanders, D. F. Moorer; Messrs Royal,
Young, Lawton. Youmans, Best, Light
sey and Moorer.
After a pleasant visit to their son,
Dr. and Mrs. Moorer have returned to
their home at St. George.
Mrs. M. Young entertained the Fair
fax U. D. C., on the 1st inst. During
the social hour, a delicious salad course
was served followed by coffee and cake.
Mrs. W. P. Wingard and Mrs. Ralph
Blount, entertained the children of the
Confederacy at their regula r meeting.
Rev. D. B. Oroecloee has returned
from Florence, where he ivisited his
daughter, Mrs. Hattie Bowers.
The first attraction of the Lyceum
course was much enjoyed Tuesday
evening.
Miss Willie Timmons, of Lowndee-
viUe is visiting friends in Fairfax.
Mesdames Goethe, MeSweoncy and
Browning wars in town Saturday.
Mrs. M. A. Moys is visiting in Florida.

Edward Franklin, Jr., the 20-moMhs
old son of Mr. and Mrs. E. F. Wood
ward, of this dty, died Friday night at
the home of Mr. and Mrs. D. W. Aider-
man, of Florence, where Mrs. Wood
ward was spending a few days while
en route home from a visit to relatives
in Wilmington, N. C. The little body
was brought to Barnwell that night and
buried in the Baptist Churchyard Sat
urday afternoon, the Rev. W. L. Hayes
conducting the funeral services in the
presence of s large number of sorrow-
rowing relatives and sympathetic
friends. Tbs news of the little boy's
death was a distinct shock to both the
members of the family and their many
friends, as it was not known that his
condition was so serious. The be
reaved parents have the sincere sym
pathy of the entire emmunity in their
