20 entries.
The editor was presented with a can
each of okra and tomatoes and snap
beans last week by The People’s good
friend, Mrs. R. W. Youmgblood, of
Seiglingville.

The editor was presented with two
stalks of fine sugar cane yesterday by
C. D. Kinard, of Ulmer, who was in the
city with his nephew, A. D. Kinard.
The stalks measured over 8 feet in
length.
Mrs. J. R. Vandieur, of Anderson,
who has been the guest of Mrs. W. H.
Duncan this week, delivered a short
talk to the local members of the D. A.
R. on Monday afternoon in the interest
of the organization.

Miss Dosia Jones, of Marion, who
recently composed the ‘Toast to South
Carolina,” was the guest of Mrs. W. L.
Hayes last Week, while en route to her
home from the meeting of the U. D. C.
of the State at Aiken.
The Rev. B. M. Foreman, of Orange
burg, has been called to Cypress Chap-

mence his pastoral work on the first

were the week-end guests of Barnwell

A five-mile automobile race was run
on the Sherwood track Friday after
noon. Only two cars—* Chalmers and
a Ford—W»re entered. The Chalmers
waa the winner, making the five lape

The People received too late for pub
lication this week a communication
from Col. H. D. Calhoun, regarding the
Belgium relief. It will appear next
week.
A terrific windstorm passed over this
section Thursday night, uprooting
many trees and snapping off large limbs
from the oaks in the Circle. One or
twoofthe carnival tents were blown
down and the canvas badly torn. At
times the wind reached cyclonic velo
city.
Congressman “Jimmie” Byrnes came
over from Aiken Friday morning to
attend the fair and meet his many
friends in this county. The Congress
man is deservedly popular and the
people of Barnwell are always extend
him the “gladhand.”
The Barnwell High School eleven
defeated the fait Denmark team on the
local gridiron Friday afternoon in a
•nappy game of football, the score being
14 fo 0. The locals starrad in the for
ward past play and were also good in
the center rushes. In fact, they played
an all-round good game and deserved
to win.
