THURSDAY OCTOBER 21, 1915. .
The Blackville boosters who took
Barnwell by storm last week were very
much gratified over the cordial recep
tion tendered them here and the Black
ville Herald expressed the opinion that
the foundation has been “laid for cor
dial and most pleasant relationship’’
between the two towns, concluding its
article with the following words:
“After having been royally enter
tained for the time, goodbyes were
said and the Blackville boosters took up
their way homeward, feeling that the
trip was not only the most delightful
one but a most successful one also. The
Blackville boosters will always have
the kindest regards for Barnwell be
cause of the treatment accorded them
on this trip.”
There is absolutely no reason for the
existence of a feeling of bitterness be
tween these two sister towns, and The
People would welcome—and is pre
pared to aid in its small way—the bury
ing of the hatchet and the furtherance
of a “get-together” movement. Cer
tain signs point to the attainment of
this end, both in a social and business
way. Last summer several of the busi
ness men of Blackville very delightfully
entertained a number of our people
with an elegant picnic at Farrell’s Lake;
the boosters’ trip last week resulted in
a crowd of people attending the Chau-
taequa, and a number of local business
aaen have subscribed for stock in
■tadryilie’s new bank.
Come over and see us, friends; you
will always find the latch-string on the
“As long as the lamp holds out to
burn
' - . I,.
The vilest sinner msy return”—
or words to that effect—and there is
still hope for the redemption of Char
leston. The grand jury of that county
recently returned true bills against
forty-nine alleged blind tigers. Out of
that number, one has been convicted
of illegally storing contraband whiskey,
twenty-six have pleaded guilty to the
same charge and the other twenty-two
are yet to be tried.
Governor Manning’s law-enforcement
policy seems to be bearing fruit.
According to a report py the Charl
eston dispensary board, the special
constables appointed by Governor Man
ning in that county have seized over
97,300 worth of contraband liquors dur
ing the past four months, while" the
city police during the same period
turned over only abou&Jl£|0Q worth.
Any comment, we believe; would be
superfluous.
Why not invite Governor Manning to
Barnwell’s Chautauqua? «•

A Chicago paper recently lambasted
the South, calling us barbarians, illiter
ates and all manner of naughty names,
but judging from the flood of circulars
sent out by that city’ mail order houses
our money spends as well as that
from the East, North or West.
“The police are and always will be
able to handle the situation'.”—From
statement by Mayor Grace. Oh, yes;
certainly the way they prevent riot and
bloodshed is laudable.

be thoroughly up to the standard. No adulteration here.
In filling prescriptions, our two licensed pharmacists will
use the utmost care to follow the doctor’s directions. No
