Harley, Esq., was called to Columbia Wednesday on business. Mr. and Mrs. George D. Sanders, of Fairfax, were in town Wednesday. Col. W. R. Darlington, Jr., of Allen dale, was in town on business Saturday. The many friends of C. B. Swan will regret to learn of his continued ill ness. Sheriff J. B. Morris and R. B. Cole returned from Chick Springs Thursday night. • Mayor J. E. Harley ha$'~purchased a Hudson Light Six, seven-passenger touring car. Mr. and Mrs. J. B. Morris, Jr., motored over to Augusta Saturday on a shopping trip. The Barnwell baseball team left Mon day morning for Walterboro for a series three games. - , : W.'D. C. Patterson. Mrs. S. J. Clary and family will leave the latter part of the week for Syl vania, Ga., where they will visit Mr. and Mrs. C. A. Bennett. Quite a number of Barnwell people attended the picnic at Baldoc last Wednesday. They report a very en joyable outing. Miss Minnie Price spent the week end at the Isle of Palms while en route home from a vialt to her sister, Mrs. J. G. Howell, of Bishopville. Mr. and Mrs. R. C. Holman and little daughter, Mias Carrie, left Sunday for New York, via steamship from Char leston. They will be gone several weeks. The crops have been suffering for the lack of rain, but showers were due last night (Wednesday), according to the Dutch Weather Prophet, of Co um- bia. Allendale, July 25.—On Thursday afternoon a most delightful and novel entertainment in the form of a living checker game was given under the auspices of Mrs. Jack Harris Circle of the W. M. S. The ladies were very fortunate in securing the services of Mr. Fishburne, the southern champion checker player, and Mr. Dillon, of At lanta. The checker board was a large, grassy one, and instead of in&nhqate red and black men the checks on the board were occupied by twelve most attractive women opposing twelve most attractive young men.
