sunshine this week. Although the sun

Mr. John Duncan Holmes returned
home from the College of Charleston
last week to spend the summer vaca
tion with Barnwell relatives.
While Barnwell street thermometers^
have registered higher degrees of heat
this summer, Monday was almost insuf
ferable, due to the humidity.

were accompanied by Mrs. Holman,
little Miss Carrie Holman and B. P.
Davies.
A thunderstorm, accompanied by
rain, wind and hail, passed over this
section Sunday afternoon, blowing
down a number of trees and damaging
electric light and telephone wires.
Some damage to farm buildings near
town has also been reported. Monday
night two electric storms, with a heavy
downpour of rain, visited this section.
Many persons remarked that the first,
storm, which passed to the south of
Bamwelk, presented the most vivid
displsy of lightning they had ever
witnessed.The fleshes were almost con
tinuous. making the night nearly as
bright as day.

Two new enterprises in this county,
both of which are located at Allendale,
were authorised last week by the sec
tary of state. The Hewlett Cotton Oil
Company waa commissioned Thursday
with I capital stock of 110,000. The
petitioners are: J. H. Hewlett. S. P.
Hewlett and James M. Patterson.
Henry Wolff lc Co. was commissioned
Friday with a capital stock of MO,000,
the petitioners being R. P. Wolff and
T. L. Pearlstine. The new concern
will do s general mercantile business.
Mrs. Brown ELatortains.
Mrs. Edgar A. Brown entertained
very delightfully at bridge Thursday
afternoon in honor of her sister, Mrs.
John T. Stephens, of Kershaw. After
a number of spirited games had been
played it was found that Mrs. R. C.
Kirkland had made the highest score
and she was ^awarded the first prize.
The consolation prize was cut by Mrs.
Charlie Brown and the guest prize was
presented to Mrs. Stephens. Delight
ful refreshments were served.
