Jack Johnson, for nearly five years
the heavyweight “champion” of the
world, has been “knocked dut” by Jess
Willard, the “white hope.” Ever since
Johnson won the championship from
James J. Jeffries there have been un
successful attempts to discover a white
man physicially able to wrest belt from
the negro. And now that one has been
found, what does it prove? Merely
that Williard excelled Johnson in brute
force. Absolutely nothing else. In
mental capacity, physicial bravery and
moral courage the white race always
has and always will excel the negro.
The intense race feeling that was
aroused in many quarters when John
son won the championship, however,
will probably make it impossible for
another negro to ever compete again
for that “honor.” The spectacle of a
white man standing up and exchanging
blows with a negro brute in a prize ring
is merely disgusting and revolting.
“We are fighting Germany, Austria
and drink, and the greatest of these
three deadly foes is drink,” says David
Lloyd George, Chancellor of English
Exchequer. It is further shown that
while male employes are working
longer hours, the production of the
factories is actually less and the reason
is that the men are drinking more
whiskey. So grave is the conditions
existing that the British government is
eonsidering seriously the advisability of
prohibition.
Several weeks ago we expressed
the belief that world wide prohibi
tion is entirely within the bounds of
probability. We still adhere to that
belief and at least one well ported,
sound-thinking gentleman of Barnwell
has expressed the same view.
