ENTOMOLOGIST WAINS
OF PINK ROLL WORM
FanMnAr* Urf«4 to Watch CIomIjt

State Entomologiit A. F. Conradi, of
Clemson College, urges farmers to be
•wake to the dangers of the pink boll
worm of cotton and - to learn enough
about this pest to detect it the instant it
appears in a field in South Carolina, if
it should appear. Prof. Conradi states
that the pink boll worm is the most de
structive of all insects and the fact that
it has been introduced into Florida has
led him to prepare a statement which
will help the farmers to recognize the
pink boll worm or suspect its presence
in their fields should it be there. The
damage done by the boll weevil in the
South has been so vast that the en
tomologists urge Southern fanners to
go to any lengths to prevent another
such insect enemy from gaining a foot
hold in this country.
Vigilance of the most wide-awake
sort is advised and, though the pink
boll worm may never be introduced
into the State and though outbreaks
wherever they occur may be stamped
out successfully, it will be well for all
farmers to be on the safe side and take
the time necessary to learn something
about this insect. Prof. Conradi ad
vises all farmers to write to the United
States Department of Agriculture for a
bulletin on the pink boll worm issued
August 7, 1914. This will give them
the necessary information.
The immature stages of the pink
boll worm occur in Egyption cotton seed
and furnish a ready means of artificial
spread over great distances. In 1912
the State Entomologist of Arizona
seized 500 pounds of Egyptian cotton
seed which contained this pest. Those
who have studied the situation care
fully have always believed that the
pink boll worm could establish itself in
the country if introduced and its pres
ence would greatly increase the diffi
culties of of producing cotton. Though
the government has established a
quarantine against all cottonseed from
foreign countries, it appears that bales
of Egyptian cotton, unlike our short
staple bales, carry a comparatively
large amount of seed, which would
make such shipments especially dan
gerous when coming from pink boll
worm infected territory.
The worm injures squares and bolls,
causing them to drop and in bad in-
festatoins damaging the crop to the ex
tent of 50 per cent. Where a single
lock of a boll is infested the other locks
open prematurely, causing short kinky
fiber. The value of fiber is further
more reduced by the insect’s habit of
standing and it appears that it also
causes reduction of oil in the seed. No
variety of cotton seems to be free from
its attacks and Prof. Hunter thinks that
it is practically certain that the worm
will attack Sea Island as well as all up
land strains of colton.
Farmers should not delay in writing
for copies now of Dr. Hunter’s bulletin
on the pink boll worm, which will help
them to identify the species, should
they encounter it.
Prof. Conradi will watch closely the
developments of the pink boll wonn
situation in Florida.
