M ISS JESSIE was loved by all who
knew her in the town oi Eynden.
So, when Judge (./i;.<.r died and b ft

Oliver, heF only sister’s boy. was
also left to her care. She intended

that she would .he alone. The big

Just one solitary woman, she decided.
Then Miss Jessie went over to the
Linden orphanage to adopt a bahy.
The matron welcomed her gratefully,
“I have decided to adopt a little girl,”
Jessie said, "which would you recoin
mend, Mrs. Gray?”
The matron, was hesitant. “Our
home is so full of heart stories,” slit*
said, ‘‘tlii.t we do not allow our sym
pathies to hold sway. Put there are
two cases, two dear bahy girls, whom
I would loYt* to see happily placed.
Here is Mllly Stephens’ baby girl, fair
and dainty as Milly herself. She ran

Is wee Nora —that name is nil we
know, of her parentage. A sweet
young Irish girl came one night—to-
the town' hospital; slit* had been
grievously disappointed .in not tind-
1ng her young husband, as site said,
at the pier to nie4*t her when the
steamer arrived from abroad. Seeking
him, she catm* on here, and died with
.wee Nora's coining.
“‘Xora’-wns worked on her handker
chiefs. so we called the bahy ‘Nora’
when it was brought to us. Black
hair, you see. Mis* Jessie, and eyes as
dark blue as English violets.”
Miss Jessie next morning went to
the orphanage and adopted both Milly
Stephens’ baby anil the wee N’orn.
‘Tve always wanted a namesake,”
said Jessie. So the fair haired “haby
girl was enjlled Jessica. T’tt- children

she fancied an aptitude for iniislc .in
little Jesshfa. Miss Jessie hastened .to
give the child an education !n musle.
Nora was just a happy home body,
with no special talent perceptible.
Nora’s lilting song was heard In the-4 1
gloomy hall; Nora’s silvery laughter
echoed through the garden. Easily she
gave place to Jessica’s own ^•eallzed
superiority.

The halls of Oliver’s house were
