Mti Wins on 1st Ballot
Second Race for Governor With Man
ning, Cooper and Richards Leading
. The returns Tuesday night from the Democratic Primary held
i^k|uth Carolina that day, indicated the feat of Pole L. Blease for
Y'^wnited States Senate by a large majority, Senator E. D. Smith
being renominated on the first ballot.
Blease S.._ 44,OCX)
Jennings 1,547
Pollock....: .--.1,362
Smith 60,000
Smith’s lead was steadily growing. He was strongly, supported
in counties which two years ago went heavily for Governor Blease.
Probably 44,000 votes were still unaccounted for, but it was not
believed that they would change the results.
In the governor’s race out of more than - 87,000 votes reported
Manning, Cooper and Richards were running neck and neck, with
Manning slightly in the lead. There will be a second primary, with
two of these three candidates running ovein. It will be impossible to
say which of the two will make the second race, until the complete
returns are in.
The vote a) 2 o’clock in the Governor’s race stood as follows:
Browning 1,120
Clinkscales - 12,539
Cooper :.. 17,069
Duncan 570
Irby..--- - 9,957
Manning 17,334

missioner the leaders seem to be
Shealey and Fortner. They will
probably be pitted against each
other in a second primary.
- Lieutentant Governor.
Andrew J. Bethea and B. Frank
Kelly will run over for Lieutenant
Governor. The vote in this con
test stood at 2 o’clock:

against 32,601 for his opponent,
Mr. Willis.
CongreM.
Byrnes, Aiken Johnston and
Ragsdale have been renominated
to Congress. Finley is leading in
the 5th district, and Whaley in
the 1st.
Whaley has probably been re
elected, but a good part of Char
leston vote is still unreported at
2 o’clock.
There was fair weather through
out the State and a very heavy
•vote was polled.
Adjutant General.
AdjutantjGeneral Moore seems
to have been re-elected. At 2
o’clock he had 48,338 votes as
Mr. G. A. Cole went up to ^Columbia
last week to see his brother, Mr. R. B.
Cole, who has been in a hospital there
for the past three weeks.
Mr. Jennings McNab; who was oper
ated on recently in an Augusta hos
pital, is improving rapidly and hopes
to be able to return home next week.
At a recent meeting of the stock
holders of the Barnwell County Building
and Loan Association the capital stock
was increased to $150,000 and a new
series of stock will be issued Septem
ber 1st.
BARNWELL OIL MILL
DESTROYED BY FIRE
Plant Valued at $65,000 Went up in Smoke Early Yesterday
Morning.—A Lot of New Machinery Had Been -
Installed Recently.
Fire broke out about 2:30 o’clock yesterday (Wednesday) morning
in the main mill building of the Barnwell Oil Mill’s plant here and
spread to surrounding buildings, completely destroying the mill
builing, seed and gin houses, causing a loss of $65,000. It is not
known how the fire started as it had gained considerable headway
when discovered by the night-watchman, who immediately gave fbe
alarm. Considerable improvements had been made in the plant this
summer, and it was second to none in the Slate, size considered. All
that escaped the flames were the hull house, a frame store room, the.
office and tanks. The plant was insured, but the amount could not -
be learned. It is not known whether or not the company will re
build.
* Mr. and Mrs. L. M. Calhoun will leave
in a few daya for Blackyille, where
they will live temporarily, Mr. Calhoun
having a large interest in the furniture
store in that town. He will retain his
interest in the Home Furniture Com
pany at Barnwell.
A fanner friend says that he ia of
the opinion that pulling fodder injures
the corn. A few years ago some of hia
fodder was allowed to remain on the
stalk and while he noticed no increoao
in the size of the ears, the graia
heavier in weight.
