The Street
#of Tombs ii
One of Its Mysteries
Revealed
By CLARISSA MACKIE
■ ^
Tom Newell pointed down tbe dark,
tortuous street of tlie old Chinese city.
"That? My dear boy, you don't want
to stroll through the Street of Tombs,
do your
“Why not?” demanded Rex Forbes.
“It looks promising as Chinese streets
«o"
“Promising! Ye gods!" groaned
Newell, with disgust
“Fascinating, then,” laughed tbe
other. "Has all the earmarks of ori
ental mystery; smells to bearen; is
filthy, dark; has a name that bespeaks
murder lurking around every corner,
and all that, you know,"
While Newell hesitated Rex laughed
again and-clapped a hand on his
friend's shoulder.
“Not afraid of it, are you?” he gibed.
“After living in China for five years”—
“I have a decent respect for a few ot
her unexplained mysteries," finished
Newell quickly, "and, believe me, Rex,
this is one of them.’'
“Tell me about It"
•Til tell you after dinner. Then if
you still want to walk through the
Street of Tombs i’ll swallow my objec-
ms and go with you,” replied Newell
"Done," agreed Forbes. And, re
turning to tbe city gate, they entered
rickshas That bad been waiting there
and were soon bowling along the bund
toward tbe modern city of Shanghai
It was after dinner at tbe club that
Forbes claimed tbe promised story. -
Tom Newell lighted a cigar and puff
ed thoughtfully before he spoke:
“Two years ago I bad a friend, En-
derby. You may remember that 1
frequently mentioned his name In my
letters to you. He was the agent for
a well known American invention, and
be was well liked by the American
colony here. Only one thing was
against him. Be was fond of prowl
ing around tbe native city yonder, and
you know that it Is not considered
good form here In tbe model settle
roent”
“What happened?" asked Forbes
curiously.
“Nobody knows—at least none of
his friends in Shanghai nor anywhere
else. One day be asked me to go into
tbe old city with him to see some por
celalns that were said to date from
tbe Ming dynasty. He was going to
invest in them if they were the res
thing.
-“I went with him, for 1 liked En
derby. In spite of his crudities He
tj pitied ray own fast growing, ambl
tlous young country. 1 Inspected the
porcelains In a dim shop that looked
like a thieves' den, and 1 discovered
that they were all clwmsy counter
felts. I broke the news to Enderby,
and he laughed and said, ‘Better luck
next time.’
"On our way back to the city gate-
the ' very gate through which we
emerged today. Rex—Enderby paused
on that corner of the Street of Tombs
and asked me to wait for him. ns be
had a little errand to do down there.
"T asked him If be knew bow the
street bad gained Its name-that It was
said that hundreds of men had entered
it never to emerge at the other end or
to return.. They vanished completely,
and because of their vanishing and
the mystery surrounding their disnp
penrnnce the street was known as the
Street of Tombs, for it must contain
many unknown, never to be discovered
graves."
Newell lighted a fresh cigar, and bis
eyes stared thoughtfully at the glow
Ing end.
Rex Forbes waited Impatiently; then
he spoke:
“Well, are you going to tell me that
Enderby was murdered?"
“I can’t tell you that for 1 do not
know. I do know that from tbe In
stant be vanished around tbe first
turn In the Street of Tombs he
dropped out of my life. I never saw
him again." Tom Newell’s voice was
intttte unsteady.
“And you could find no trace of
him?”
“Not a trace. Four private detectives
were sent into the old city”—
“And what happened?” Interrupted
the Impatient Forbee.
“They never came back, either," end
ed Newell.
There fell a long silence between
tbe two men. Newell, an old resident
of Shanghai, was thinking of tbe loss
of his friend Enderby. Rex Forbes,
fresh from the United States, was
eagerly hoping for an opportunity to
clear up this mystery of the Street of
Tombs.
At Inst Newell spoke.
“St{ll want to stroll through the
Street of Tombs?" he asked. And be
was not surprised at the answer be re
ceived.
“Yes," said Forbes doggedly. . “I’m
going Into tbe Street of Tombs, and
I’m going to uncover tbe mystery of
tbe dls*i>pearanee of Enderby."
“Very well," agreed Newell “I am

“HI take a chance on that," retorted
the other quickly. "And you-will you
come too?" \
“Yea." said Newell without hesita
tion. "Yoo ve laapired me with a do

“An automatic revolver would be a
bandy companion," suggested Forbes.
“HI lead you on# of mine," said
Netvell. Then, rising and tossing aside
his cigar, be added: *‘\Ve better be off
to bed early, for ws will have a busy
day tomorrow, and It may end la a
long rest for both of us. You under
stand that, Rex?"
“I know It,” nodded Forbes grimly
“But I’m thinking of that poor fellow
Enderby, and i’ll risk it"

. The two Americans bad chosen broad
daylight and plenty of sunshine for
tbelr entry Into tbe Street of Tombs.
Tbe end of the street where It de
bouched upon a wider thoroughfare
was a place of busy little sbope, but
after tbey~tiad made-the first turn in
Its tortuous windings the street bore a
strangely deserted appearance.
Colored signs fluttered above tbelr
heads, above the signs were closely
shuttered balconies, and still fartbet
up, above the fantastic roof lines, was
a silt of blue sky.
Tom Newell kept his eyes to tbe
right and Rex Forbes watched out on
the left band side of tbe narrow street
as they went slowly along.
Suddenly Forbes stopped before a
shop window.
“Jove, Tom, what do you think of
that?” he muttered excitedly.
Newell paused beside him and stared
at the enormous polished globe of pure
rock crystal that revolved dizzily on
an ebony pedestal.
Already Red Forbes had been caught
by tbe deadly fascination of that wblrl-
, lag ball He was hypnotized Into ri
gidity as be stood there.
Fortunately for both of them, Tom
Newell was possessed of extraordinary
will power, and as soon as he realized
what was happening there before bis
eyes be removed bis gaze from tbe
ball, and as he did so there seemed to
be revealed to blm In one enlightening
flash tbe mystery of the Street of
Tombs.
Unwary foreigners, attracted By tbe
wonderful sight of the large rock crys
tal ball, had gazed upon It to become
hypnotized and thus rendered them
selves easy victims to robbery and
murder. Tbe slimy creeks that bound
ed tbe walls of tbe old city and tbe
rushing river Into which they flowed
would bide tbe evidences of crim&
Suddenly a whisper floated down to
them from the closed balcony above.
“Beware, Newell! Beat ttl Beat it
man!” And with tbe warning words
there sounded a cry as If the speaker
had been attacked; then shutters broke
open, tbe frail balcony tottered under
the weight of a man's heavy body, the
carved railing snapped and precipi
tated a man garbed In Chinese clothing
Into Newell’s outstretched arms.
Tom Newell was a giant In stature
and strength. One glance In tbe man's
face convinced blm that it was the
missing Enderby. bis once ruddy face
ravaged by pain and privation. Then
be held Enderby close to bis breast,
and, dragging at Forbes'jiand, be cried
fiercely:, ^ * ‘ r
“Come. Rex. comet Come with me
for your life! Tbe Street of Tombs
Is opening her arms to you!"
Forbes, partly roused from bis
apathy, ran on obediently, and after
he felt tbe fresh air In bis face he re
covered some of bis wits. Many door
ways behind them bekbed forth wild
eyed natives, who followed tbetii as
far as they dared, for tbe Street of
Tombs bears an evil reputation In Its
own city and has no wish to air Its
secrets.
A few scattering shots followed
them, but their chain armor was proof
against bullets, aud soon they came
out into the broad street, where a
great crowd silently watched them, as
If they were witnessing a resurrection
from tbe dead.
Said a peddler of sweetmeats to his
neighbor
“Behold, they entered the Street of
Tombs and came forth alive. They
bear charmed lives, these foreign dev
ils."
“Some of them do.” said bis neighbor
dryly, for he knew that the Street of
Tombs rarely gave up Its victims.
When they reached the model settle
ment with the wounded Enderby, New
ell and Forbes listened to a strange
story—bow Euderby, attracted by tbe
revolving crystal, became hypnotized
and was easily captured and set to
work In an evil smelling underground
