Fairfax, May 27.—The closing exer
cises at the Fairfax graded and high
schools were concluded Monday even
ing.
The commencement sermon last
Sunday by the Rev. R. S. Truesdale of
Charleston was one of the best ever
heard here.
The exercises last evening consisted
of the reading of papers by the gradu
ating class, the presentation of diplo
mas and medals, music and an address
by R. 1. Manning of Sumter.
The nine graduates are: Misses Lillie
and Ruth Wilson, Mildred Loadholt,
Lucy Googe, Kate Fennell and Ida
Compton and J. T. Wilson, Jr., Hal-
brook Williams and Charlie Fennell.
The medal offered by the Hank of
Fairfax to the pupil in the school mak
ing the highest average in proficiency
during the season was won by Miss
Hattie Dowling.
The music by Misa Sadie Harter at
the piano and M. A. Moye with the
violin was an innovation hero but it
was refreshing and heartily enjoyed.
Mr. Manning’s address was on the
importance of education, stressing the
fact that under our present method of
electing our law makers and executive
officers it is very important that the
very electors should be intelligent.
The attendance was the largest ever
seen at a school commencement here,
the large auditorium being filled so
that many had to stand in the aisles.
D. P. McCain and his assistant teach
ers have done fine work in the school
during the session just closed and it is
with much regret to the people here
that he would not accept the position
of principal for another term. He goes
to McCormick and will be succeeded
fcere by F. C. Chitty of Olar.

Blackyille, May 31.—The BlackVifle
high school is now. closing a most suc
cessful year. Not for many years have
the trustees been so fortunate in se
curing teachers as they were the past
session-. The smooth running of the
school and the good work of the pu
pils are both due to the efficient corps
of teachers. The following were re
elected: Miss Alva Baxley, first grade;
Miss Marguerite Furse, second and
third grades; Miss Mary Raley, fourth
and fifth grades: Miss Gennie Simons,
fifth and sixth grades; Miss Sara Babb,
seventh grade. However, none of
them accepted for another year. The
patrons-may well regret the loss of
these teachers. Misses Baxley and Ra
ley have accepted ' positions in the
North Augusta school, while Miss
Babb hill go to Easley to take a high

“AS THE HUSBAND IS,
THE WIFE IS.”
Tennyson used the above to express belief in the pre-
domination of the masculine sex in ail things. Does your
observation of the two sexes justify this belief? Can -
you not recall very many men who have been made bet
ter morally, physically and financially by the superior
character and force of their wives? On the other hand,
; how many women have you known whose lives for the
better have been improved by # the uplift of their hus
bands? In the business world it would be a regrettable / ,
thing to fix the standard of integrity for all women by
that observed by their husbands. Our experience in a
business way with women has been so very satisfactory
that we are writing this as a special invitation to the j—r
people of Barnwell county to deposit their money with
us and pay all their accounts by check, assuring them of
our painstaking interest in their behalf

HUSBAND RESCUED
DESPAIRING WIFE
After Four Years of Discouraging
Conditions, Mrs. Bullock Gave
Up in Despair. Husband
Came to Rescne.
Catron, Ky.—In an interesting letter
from this place, Mrs. Bettie Bullock
writes as follows: “1 suffered for four
years, with womanly troubles, and during
this time, 1 could only sit up for a little
while, and could not walk anywhere at
all. At times, I would have severe pains
in my left side.
The doctor was called in, and his treat
ment relieved me for a while, but I was
soon confined to my bed again. After
that, nothing seemed to do roe any good.
I had gotten so weak I could not stand,
and I gave up in despair.
At last, my husband got me a bottle of
Cardui, the woman’s tonic, and I com-
roenced taking it. From the very fi£\
dose, I could teif it was helping me^Rr
can now walk' two miles without its
tiring me, and am doing all my work.”
If you are all run down from womanly
troubles, don’t give up^in despair. Try
Cardui, the woman’s tonic. It has helped
more than a million women, in its 50
