SOM SHOULDERS IN
HOKES AND MULES
Dirty or nmtliiic Cotkr. UwoWy Tfco
Cmm, Soy* VoloHnorioo.
"It is really a simple matter for
owners to prevent sore shoiilders in
their horses and mules," said Dr. M.
Ray Powers, State Veterinarian and
head of the veterinary division of Clem-
son College in discussing this condition,
which-Often leads to more serious
' trouble. All that is necessary, he con
tinued, is to take a few precautions.
"The cause of sore shoulders in
horsetand mules," said Dr. Powers,
"can invariably be traced to ill fitting
or filthy collars and their care, and
consequently, most farmers have one
Or more horses or mules with sore
shoulders during their busy season.
“The chafing of ill fitting collars
causes inflammation and abrasion of
the skin and, in many instances, injury
of the deeper tissues. Quite frequent
ly deep seated abcesses form above the
shoulder joint at the lower part of the
collar seat. These abcesses and the
growth of fibrous tissue which forms
in this region require surgical treat
ment, but simple abrasions and in
flammations of the skin yield readily to
treatment if treated promptly.
"Abcesses which occur at the point
of the shoulder should be opend as
soon as they form, syringed daily with
suitable antiseptic solutions, and be
kept open until the discharge ceases.
Failure to do this will result in the for
mation of hard, fibrous tumors which
can be removed only by operation.
"In this, as in all diseased conditions,
however,” Dr. Powers added, "it is
necessary to remove the cause. This
can be done by keeping collars clean
and by seeing that they fit so that the
shoulders will not be chafed and
bruised. The practice of removing col
lars and bathing shoulders at midday is
one of the best preventive measures
that can be adopted. As soon as

Jertev City.
Jersey City, May 16th.—The most
remarkable non-stop run of an automo
bile engine ever held in this country is
still in progress at the garage of the
Crescent Automobile Company, on
Hudson Boulevard, this city. On April
8th last, a Cadillac 1914 stock model
engine was started running in a small
booth set up in full view of the hun
dreds of motorists who daily pass along
the Boulevard, which forms the eastern
end of the Lincoln Highway.
The engine has now been in continu
ous operation for more than five weeks,
has covered over 2-1,000 road miles, or
more than six trips across the conti
nent, via the Lincoln Highway, and is
still turning up a daily average of 536
miles, or a little over22 miles per hour.
No signs of overheating have yet ap
peared and only a pint and a half of
water has been fed into the radiator
since the test started. Cylinders and
bearings are lubricated with Polarine,
the oil being fed at the rate of 26 drops
per minute.
The fuel used is the Standard Oil
Company’s Motor Gasoline, and the
engine averages 44 miles on a gallon of
gas. It is run at from GOO to 700 revo
lutions per minute.
All previous non-stop records are
now far out-distanced, the best previ
ous run being that of the Packard,
which ran for 16 days in an official test
under the auspices of the Automobile
Club of America. »

One of the Newberry Shririers
co;:„*ht on to a new style while Jn At
lanta last week. A handsome and
handsomely-dressed woman was get
ting on a street car and he was look
ing. It wasn’t the hobble skirt that
was the new style; he sees that in New
berry. But there are no street cars
"in Newberry, and it may be that is the
reason he had not caught on to the
new style before. As the woman
stepped up on the street car step there
was—a display of hosiery? No, a dis
play of hose, and very short hose at
that—just like small children wear in
warm weather—not more than six
inches high—and all above that, as far
the eye could reach, which was to the
knee, was the nude. They say that is
the style now.—Newberry Observer.

STOMACH TROUBLE
A South Carolina farmer had a large number
of hogs which were ready to kill. The weather
was so warm that killing was out of the question.
He went to hla^telephone, called a dealer in

at a good price/.. He then called the local freight
office and arranged for shipment.
The telephone is now a necessity on the farm.

Pomeroyton, Ky.—In interesting ad
vices from this place, Mr. A. J. Hughes
j writes as follows: “I was down with
] stomach trouble for five (5) years, and
j would have sick headache so bad, at
times, that I thought surely I would die.
I tried different treatments, but they
did not seem to do me any good.
I got so bad, I could not eaf or sleep,
afid all my friends, except one, thought I
would die. He advised me to try
Thedford’s Black-Draught, and quit
taking other medicines. I decided to
take his advice, although I did notjiave
any confidence in it
I have now been taking Black-Draught
for three months, and it has cured me— M
haven’t had those awful sick headacti ‘
%
since I began using it.
I am so thankful for what Black-
Draught has done for me."
Thedford’s Black-Draught has been
found a very valuable medicine for de
rangements of the stomach and liver. It
is composed of pure, vegetable herbs,
contains no dangerous ingredients, and
acts gently, yet surely, ft can be freely
used by young and. old, and should be
