For
The attention of the Department of
Agriculture haa recently been called to
the widespread use, especially in piral
communities, of salicylic acid in putting
up ( preserve*. The head of a law
drug and chemical supply house states
that people living in Southwest Vir
ginia, North and South Carolina, Ken
tucky, Tennessee, and western Georgia,
have been purchasing salicylic acid in
14 lb. packages for a number of years
and that the practice has grown to an
enormous extent
The Department is aware that this
practice is not confined to salicylic acid
under its own name alone, but that
large quantities of this acid, and of
boric acid as well, are sold under fanci
ful names as preserving powders or
canning compounds at prices which
qfe much in excess of their real value.
In the directions for use, the house
vrife is told to fill the jar with the fruit
or vegetables, cover with water and add
a teaspoonful of the powder. It is true
that these powders may prevent the
decay or the fruit or vegetable, but they
also encourage uncleanly or careless
work, and their excessive use may be
attended with very serious effects upon
the health. Salicylic acid is a medicine
of the greatest value in acute articular
rheumatism and certain other diseases.
It is well known as a poisonous sub
stance, and one of the eviles which may
accompany its use is derangement of
the digestion. It is therefore plain
that its extensive use in food may lead
to disturbance of digestion and health.
It is entirely practicable to put up
both fruits and vegetables in such a
manner that they will keep indefinitely
by sterilizing the products by means of
heat, and there is no excuse for run
ning any risk by the use of preserving
powdersT The Department of Agricul
ture has issued the following Farmers’
Bulletin son preserving:
F. B. 203 Canned Fruit, Preserves
and Jellies.
F. E 359 Canning Vegetables in the
Home.
F. B. 521 Canning Tomatoes at-Home
and in Club Work.
These bulletins, which may be ob
tained without cost by applying to the
Division of Publications of the Depart
ment, give exact directions for canning
and preserving foods without the use
of preserving powders or canning com
pounds.

Information Concerning Several Craps
Valuable for Grasing Hogs.
As soon as a man has his cotton and
corn well under way, he should set
about planting grazing crops for his
hogs. This is the advice given by au
thorities at Clemson College. Most of
these crops are admirably adapted for
planting at just the time when the av
erage farmer has a little brbathing
spell after getting his cotton and corn
stands and this is the time to put in the
grasing crops which are to feed the
hogs and make meat for the farm or
money for the farmer.
There has beem prepared at Clemson
a table of grazing crops for hogs and
the following information is abstracted
from this table:
Rape, sow in late summer, 3 to 6
pounds per acre, drill or broad cast.
Time before ready for grazing, 2 mortths;
grazing period, 3 months.
Cowpeas, sow April to July, 1-2 to 1
bushel per acre, drill or broadcast.
Time befqye ready for grazing, 2 to 3
months; grazing period, 6 weeks.
’ Soy beans, sow May to July, 1-2 to 1
bushel per acre, drill. Time before
ready for grazing, 2 to 3 months; graz
ing period, 4 weeks. r
Sorghhum, sow May to July, 4 to 8
quarts, drill. Time before ready for
grazing, 6 to 8 weeks; grazing period, 4
to 6 weeks.
Peanuts, sow May to July, 4 to 8
quarts, irill. Time before ready for
grazing, 2 to 3 months: grazing period,
all fall.
Artichokes, sow April to June, 1 to
1 1-2 bushels per acre, drill. Time be
fore ready for grazing, 4 months; graz
ing period, ail fall.

Sold Hogs by Telephone
♦
A South Carolina farmer had a large number
of hogs which were ready to kid. The weather
was so warm that killing was out of the question.
He went to his telephone, called a dealer in
Columbia over Long Distance and sold his hogs
at a good price. He then called the local freight
office and arranged for shipment. ——

Pleasant Hill, N. C.—“I suffered for

I also had dreadful pains in my back

I was certainly in a dreadful state of
health, when 1 finally decided to try
