THURSDAY APRIL 23, 1914.
Governor Blease says he is ready the
to lead the South Carolina regiments
against Mexico. Armed with a handful
of mud and a few “vitriolic expletives”
of the variety used in the bi-ennial cir
cus we venture the opinion that
Huerta would soort be in full flight.
Not satisfied with the responsibilities
incumbent upon a follower 1 of the
Fourth Estate, Editor Ed DeCamp, of
the ‘Gaffney Ledger, will soon be a
father-in-law. His daughter is to be
married in June.
Snake stories have'already started.
The Allendale Herald reports .that a
•»
rattlesnake 5 1-3 feet long and sporting
16 rattles has beef killed on W. F.
Riley’s place.
President Wilson is very inconsider
ate of baseball interests to get into a
squabble with Mexico just as the big
leagues are getting well started.
The announcement of probable War
with Mexico has caused many brave (?)
hearts to flutter in the breasts of
National Guardsmen.
HOW FARMERS CARRY
CHOLERA TO HOGS
Prmctic* of Visiting Cholsra-Infested
Lots Should Bo Abandoned.
Clemson College, April 22.—The
farmer is unconsciously a big factor in
the spread 6f hog colera, according to
Dr. M. Ray Powers, State Veterinarian
and head of the veterinary division
of Clemson College. There are sev
eral explanations of this. One is that
failure to bury dead hogs is a very
common practice throughout the State.
Although this is against the law,
public sentiment does not enforce the
proper disposal of carcasses and con
sequently hog cholera is wide spread.
The hog cholera virus is very easily
carried.A group of farmers suddenedly
decid%Jp go and look at the sick hogs
of a friend, They do so. The hogs
have cholera. The farmers trap over
‘ the hog lot looking at the sick animals.
They are next likely to go to see some
fine breeding hogs of another neigh
bor. The chances are in favor of the
tatter hogs being infected by virus car
ried on the shoes and clothing of the
visitors. This is also a good way of
cahying cholera to their hogs at
home.
No farmer with hogs suspected of
having cholera has a right,. according
to Dr. Powers, to allow a neighbor to
enter his hog lot.
Dogs should be kept in at night,
as they are also good carriers of the
disease.
In discussing ways in which hog
cholera is spread, Dr. Powers took
occasion to mention the buzzard. He
said he had come across cases where
there was apparently no way for chol
era to have invaded the herds and had
found out by investigation that buz-
. zards had broughtthe disease from long
distances.
The buzzard, he said, carried other
contagious animal diseases, though it
is as carrier of hog cholera that it
does its worst work. Dr. Powers
strongly advocates the repeal of the
law making the killing of buzzards
illegal. He classes these birds among
the mqst obnoxious of the farmer’s
feathered enemies."
But the farmer himielf. Js a targe
factor in spreading hog cholera and

serum but by quarantining his herd
and burning or burying carcasses of ail
