The People was informed on Monday
that a new departure tn fanning will
he tried around Meyer’t'Mili ihif year
—that of tobacco culture. The pro
gressive farmers who will engage in
the experiment are Messrs. W. ^A.
Meyer, Meyer Bros, and J. H. Sweat.
They will plant four acre* each and if
they meet with any degree of success
will increase the acreage next year. It
is said that the soil in this section is
admirably adapted to the growing of a
very high grade “weed” and if the cul
tivation of tobacco is engaged in on an
extensive scale The People predicts
a new era of prosperity.

DEATHS.
Mr. G. B. Eaves.
Mr. Gordon Brodker Eaves, son of
Mr. S. W. Eaves, of Ulmer, died Thurs
day, Feb. 5, in the 33th year of his age,
aftef long ill health. His body was laid
lo rest the following day in Allen’s
Chapel Cemetery beside that of his
wife. The Rev. Johnson Sanders con
ducted the iuneral services in the pi^a*
ence of a large number of sorrowing
relatives and friends. The bereaved
father has the sincere sympathy of a
host of relatives and friends in his hour
of grief.

Mr. W. L. Owen*.
Mr. William Lawrence Owens died at
St. Vincent’s hospital, Birmingham,
Ala., on fhe 13th inst. from injuries re
ceived November 13th, 1913, while.per
forming his duties as construction fore
man of the Southern Bell Telephone
and Telegraph Co. at that place.
Mr. Owens waa born Rt Elko, Barn
well County, August 2Dth, 1882,“ and
whs a young man of unusual, promise.
He was a son of the late Dr. Samuel S.
Owens, who was a member of the Leg
islature at the time of his death In 1890,
and a brother of the Hod. V. S. Owens,
of Barnwell. Mr. Owens’ body was
brought to Williston and buried in the
cemetery at that place Sunday after
noon,the Hev. W. L. Hayes, of Barn-
well, conducting the funeral services in,
the presence of I large concourse of
sorrowing relatives and sympathetic
friends. He was aihember pf Williston
Lodge, A. F. M., his brother Masons
taking part In the last sad rites. The
