BLEASE COMMUTES SENfENCES OF TEN Nine Barnwell County Murderer* Sent rip v ; Back.—Ono for Manilau(hter. Governor Blease has commuted the ^r aentences of 10 negro convicts from this county and they have been brought back to finish theirterms on the county chain gang. Nine of them were con victed of murder with recommendation to mercy and were serving life terms. The tenth was convicted of manslaugh ' and sentenced to 20 yean in State penitentiary. Among the num ber are Ferdinand.Grubbs and Quitman Johnson, who were convicted of the murder of Mr. W. Perry Ussery along With Chester Kennedy, a white man. Kennedy was given his liberty several months ago. The following is a Hst of those whose sentences have been commuted by the Governor: William Daniels, colored, convicted at the March, 1903, term of Court of murder with recommendation to mercy and sentenced to life imprisoment; sen tence commute^ to 20 years on the pub- 'bc works of tb£ county. Elmore Williams, .colored, convicted at thd July, 1911, term of Court of mur der with recommendation to mercy; the sentence commuted to 20 years on the chain gang. John Henry Holmes, colored, convict ed at the July, 1904, term of Court of murder with recommendation to mercy; life sentence commuted to 20 years on the chain gang. Quitman Johnson, colored, convicted at the March, 1910r term of Court of murder with recommendation to mercy; life sentence commuted to 30 years on the chain gang. Cas- sels, wife and daughter, of Augusta, spent Sunday with the family of H. M. Cassels. Miss Eva Hite, of Aiken, visited the Ellenton Graded School this week. Miss Laura Hankinson of North Augu sta, visited Miss Florence Bush 'Sever al days this week. W. P. Cassels, of Johnaton. was . in Ellenton Thursday and Friday of this week. / H. D. Arrington is at home again, after having been confined in the Au gusta Hospital several weeks on ac count of illness. Mrs. W. M. Mobley is visiting rela tives and friends in Columbia. Mrs. Jennie D. Finnell is visiting in Augusta. x \ • Mr. and Mrs. J. Crcslartd Bush gave a dinner February 4th in honor of the 43d birthday of Judge David Bush. Quite a number of the Judge’s friends assembled on the occasion, which was one of great feasting and good fel lowship. Ralph Willis, of Augusta, was in Ellenton one day this week. J. R. Boyleston, of Allendale, spent one day this week in our town. .B. M. Foreman, of Orangeburg, vis ited his sister, Mrs. C. \J. Ashley, this week. Ehrhardt, Feb. 7.—Of much interest to their many friends was the marriage of Miss Anhie L. Carter, of this place, to Mr. E. S. Sense, of Earn well, which occured Thursday afternoon, Feb. 5th, at 3:30 o’clock, at the home of the bride’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. B.' H. Carter. Qi^ite a number of relatives and friends assembled to witness the ceremony and at the appointed hour the bridal p&rty entered. The proces sion formed in the hall, passing through the parlor to the piazza, where the bride’s pastor, the Rev. J. C. Lawson, awaited them, in the following order: Miss Elizabeth C. Smith with Mr. W. H. Carter; Miss Sallie Carter with Mr. W. C. Carter. The bride and groom enter ed together and in a very impressive manner Mr. Lawson pronounced them man and wife. Mrs. Sease i^a young woman of many lovable traits of character, ana leaves many friends to go to Barnwell, where her husband is a prosperous young farmer.
