Candidate Became Alarmed and Mor
tally Wounded Member Whose Es
tate Now Sues the Order.
Suit has been brought at Charles
ton by S. P. Taylor, an administrator
of tbe estate of Samuel M. Taylor, his
son, against Sovereign camp, Wood
men of the World. In brief, the plain
tiff Is suing the order for $20,000
damages resulting front-tbe death of
his son, who*w£^a mortally wounded
with a pistol by a candidate who was
being Initiated into the order near
Ifonea Path, in Anderson county last
year. The case will be tried in the
United States district court at Green
ville at the term which convenes next
Tuesday. The complaint and the other
papers in the case have been filed in
the office of the clerk of the district
court.
The plaintiff alleges that on July
20, 1912, Saluda camp, No. 262,
Woodmen of the World, being located
near llonea Path, In Anderson coun
tv, proceeded with the Initiation of
one C. F. Bagwell; that the deceased
.^iunijel M. Taylor, assisted in the cer
emonies; that he, with others of the
Initiating party fired blank cartridges
at-the candidate, as a part of the cer-

The United States government
Tuesday informed Provisional Presi
dent Huerta that it looked with ob-
horronce and amazement upon his as
sumption of both executive and legis
lative powers In Mexico, and that In
view of his course could not regard as
constitution the elections planned for
October 2 6. Two notes were dispatch-
c d, one strongly phrased and written
by Secretary Bryan, inquiring about
Hie safety of imprisoned members of
Hie Mexican Congress, and the other
irawn in forceful language by Presi
dent Wilson himself and said to con
stitute practically the last efforts of
the Washington government to deal
with the Huerta authorities by dip-
•omatic means, unless there Is a de
cided change of spirit on the part of
the officials in Mexico City.
The negotiations through John

the endorsement of Federico Gamboa
for the presidency, as meaning the
elimination of Huerta, and where it

Christian Bcieac« Doctor Killed in
Her Office.
Her eyea closed and head bowed
in prayer, a motto card: “The Lord
la My Shephard, I Shall Not Want,”
held In her hand, Mra. Rebecca Gay,
•fty-flve years old, one of the moat
noted Chriatian Science practitioners
in the West, was clubbed to death in
her office in Los Angelea, supposedly
by tbe man for whom she was Inter
ceding. Her slayer la still unknown,
but Mrs. Gray la believed to have
been the victim of revenge on the
part of a gang of “while slave” art
ists which she was instrumfental in
breaking up.
Several months ago a band of men
were busily engaged In the leading
cities of California in procuring girls
for the “red light” district of San
Francisco. The members of the gang
ere working under the guise of
hristlan Scientists and were enjoy
ing quite a bit of success until Mrs.
Gay got on their trail.
She broke up its activities In a
short time, but since that time had
been the victim of many threats from
the baffled procurers. One of this
band is now supposed by the police
to have carried out these threats.
The Instrument by which Mrs. Gay
was murdered was a short section of
a lead pipe, wrapped in brown paper.
The police believe that he had enter
ed Hie woman's office in the guise of
a patient and was receiving a treat
ment when he struck the first blow as
his victim sat in front of him, her
hi ad lent in prayer.

Twenty-eight persons were killed
Friday near Johanisthal, Germany, in
the explosion and fall of Count Zep
pelin’s latest dirigible balloon, the
L-IL The twenty-eight men repre
sented the entire personnel of the
admiralty board, which was to con
duct the final trial of the dirigible
looking to its acceptance by the gov
ernment as a new unit of the Ger
man aerial navy, the pilot and crew
and Invited guests. Every person
that went aloft in the big airship is
dead.
Twenty-seven of them were killed
almost instantly by the explosion of
iris in the balloon, or burned to
death as the flaming wreck fell to the

Gas-Vapor Ignited in Anderson Gar
age When Driver Lights Cigarette
and Building is Demolished.
Three men are dead, nine in the
hospital, a concrete and stone build
ing entirely demolished and there
may be other victims in the wreck
age, as the result of a gasoline explo
sion at Anderson about 1 o’clock
Thursday morning, caused by an au
tomobile driver lighting a cigarette
while the tank of his car was being
filled with gasoline.
The dead and injured men, so far
identified, were victims of a falling
wall of the garage building, when
tbe large supply tank exploded.
The dead are:
William E. Campbell, fireman,
crushed to death.
Robert Dodd, fireman, crushed to
death.
An unidentified man whose re
mains are still under the wreckage,
believed to be a citizen who was try
ing to aid the firemen. Members of
the department and citizens are still
trying to remove the wreckage to re
cover the body,
The injured, all of whom are in
the hospital, are:
H. (’. Townsend, who owned the
bull line; left leg practically crushed
off below tbe knee and badly burned.

ures. The White House has discour
aged the heads of the army and navy
from taking any steps that would
give an alarmest impression.

Homicide Near Sumter.
A man named Pye, was shot and
instantly killed six miles east of Sum
ter Wednesday afternoon, and the
slayer, whose name is as yet un-j
known, made his escape. The killing
is alleged to have been caused by In-J
timate relations between Pye and a,
woman. The woman was arrested ^
and lodged In jail but claims to know
nothing of the killing. Sheriff Brad-:
ford and his deputies have gone to
the scene with the coroner to hold
the Inquest and endeavor to arrest
the slayer. * •

frame work, as occurred In the case
of the predecessors of the L-II. These
theories are regarded as Improbable
owing to the Improvements made in
the design of the airship to meet
such contingencies.

Three Found Dead.
Searchers found the bodies of Mrs.
Walter Nichols, aged 20, and Irving
Wrlsley, aged 29, In the woods on the
Nichols farm In West Guilford, near
Brattleboro, Conn. Both had been
shot to death, apparently by,
Wrlsley. The body of the woman’s
husband, Walter Nichols, 27, sexton
