SLAYERS OF HARTER
TRIED THIS MONTH
Hamptoa County Citxxena Prepering for
Approaching Court.
Brunson, Oct. 12.—Several days ago,
the newly-elected intendant and war
dens of the town of Brunson, after a
hot contest in election, went into office
and assumed control, but so far no rad
icle changes in administration have
been noted. Possibly the status quo
was sufficiently satisfactory to warrant
the adoption of the old adage on the
part of the new council, “Twere well
to let well enough alone.”
Citizens of this county are beginning
to talk of and prepare for the approach
ing term of court to be held in Hamp
ton this month, beginning on the third
Monday.
Among the important cases to be
tried is the one against the Walkers—
father and son—charged with the mur
der of Policeman Harter, of Allendale
Both are in jail, where they have been
confined since the alleged crime

Washington, Oct. 14.—The United
States government today informed pro
visional President Huerta that it looked
with abhorrence and amaaltnent
upon his assumption of both ex
ecutive and legislative powers io
Mexico and that in view of his course
could not regard as constitutional the
elections planned for October 3d!
Two notes were dispatched—one
strongly phrased and written by Secre
tary Bryan inquiring about the safety
of imprisoned members of the Mexican
congress and the other drawn in force
ful language by President Wilson him
self—and said to constitute practically
the last efforts of the Washington gov
ernment to deal with the Huerta au
thorities by diplomatic means unless
there is a decided change of spirit oe
the part of the officials in Mexico City.
