A Double Crime Committed Near Allen
dale.—Jealousy the Cause.
Special to The People.
Seiglingville, Aug. 18.—A double
crime was committed a few days ago on
Mr. All’s place near Allendale. After
quarreling with his wife, a negro shot

the cause. Strange to state, while at
the grave the team ran away with the
corpse, wrecking the hearse.

CAPT. MORRIS “COMES BACK”
SAYS HIS SERVANT HAS
Girea Out Vigorous Statement in Reply
Dr. frartaog’• Letter.
NOT COMMITTED A CRIME wh, n ukrd Tuesday morning if he
had anything to say in reply to Dr
Hartzog’s letter to The State, as pub
lished above, Sheriff J. B. Morris dic
tated the following vigorous statement
to a representative of The People:
“I have read the newspaper account
referred to by Dr. Hartzog and the in
formation contained therein is true and
in no way misleading. I wish to say
further that I went to Dr. Hartzog’s
office and showed him the description
of the negro. He acknowledged in the
presence of a witness that the descrip
tion fitted Rush with the exception of
weight. He also admitted that the ne
gro was in tha lower part of Georgia
last year. I offered to bring the negro
to Barnwell and have, a man here by
four o’clock the next afternoon to iden
tify him. This would have been no
expense to Dr. Hartzog and his cook
would have lost only one day’s work.
“Ido not know what Dr. Hartzog was
doing if he was not trying to protect the
negro, and I would like for him to ex
plain how he knows that Rush was not
in Richmond County when he admitted
Dr. Leighton Hartzog Doe* Not Went
Wrong ImpreMion to Go Out.
The following communication from
Dr. Leighton A. Hartzog, of Olar, ap
peared in The State Tuesday morning:
To the Editor of Ihe State:
Feeling that the piece in Sunday’s
State headed “Governor Blocked Barn
well Sheriff’’ might put your readers
under the impression that I am trying
to protect and defend a negro murder
er, • I wish to say a few words of ex
planation. Sheriff Morris having a
warrant from Richmond county, Geor
gia, charging one “Will Rush” with
murder, and being informed that my
cook went by that name, came down to
make the arrest.
The negro I have does not fill the
description of the negro wanted and
too I know that this negro hasn’t been
in Richmond county, Georgia. He was
born and raised in this vicinity, and his
reputation has always been good. I
have convincing evidence as to the
whereabouts of this negro at the time
the Georgia prisoner is said to have
made his escape.
Under these circumstances I submit
that the negro under my employ can
be found in Olar at any time for the
jurpose of identification, and if he be
guilty of murder, I would not have him
about me
On the*bther hand. I don’t propose to I
