Bates. Mr. M. N. Bates died at his home in Blackville at six o’clock Tuesday morn ing, after long ill health, the immediate cause of his death being from the ef fects of a goitre. His body was laid to rest Tuesday afternoon in the Blackville cemetery. Mr. Bates is survived by his wife, four daughters and two sons. The sympathy of their many friends is extended to the bereavbd family. HERE AND HEREABOUTS. Mr. H. H. Martin, of Blackville, is visiting relatives in Statesboro, Ga. Mr. L. Cohen returned Friday from an extended visit to New York city. Mesdames Wideman and Lightsey, of Hampton, are the guests of Mrs. Harry D. Calhoun. Mr. and Mrs. T. J. Seiglingville, August 9.—Folks in this section ought not to complain of hard times. There was a splendid rain last evening, crops are looking fine, fodder pulling has started, cotton is opening and watermelon shippers are still busy. WHEREAS, a petition in writing signed by more than one third of the qualified electors of Barnwell County was filed with me, as Supervisor of said County, on April 30, 1913, praying that an election be held for or against the sale of alcoholic liquors and beverages under an Act entitled: "An Act to provide for an election on the Sale of Alcoholic Liquors and Beverages in certain counties petitioning therefor,” Acts 1912, page 745. Notice is hereby given that an elec tion shall be held* on Tuesday, August 19, 1913, and conducted by the same officers and under the same rules and regulations provided by law for general elections. Hall, of Philadelphia, to be used in making experiments for matur ing cotton artificially. The Healing Springs High School will begin the new session on September 8th, with Prof. Z. L. Madden, of Flor ence, as principal. Misses Lottie L. Callison and Florrie Mae Smith, of Bishopville, are the assistants. Messrs. B. L. Easterling, R. A. Dea- son, V. S. Owens, and S. B. Moseley will leave this week for White Oak Springs. They will make a personally conducted tour of points of interest in and around this famous health resort. The People is indebted to Mr. Arthur Sanders for a "rattlesnake” watermelon over two feet long. This is Mr. Sanders’ second watermelon gift of the season and hi* thoughtfulness of the town- dwellers is greatly appreciated. Col. Harry D.
