THURSDAY, JUNE 12,1913. Th« Hampton Spectacle Many caustic comments have been made in the newspapers, not only of this State, but over the whole country, in regard to the inhuman treatment accorded the dead bodyof Richard Henry Austin, the negro desperado, by a mob at Hampton two weeks ago. That it was a brutal deed is the least that can be said of it. Not only have the editors of newspapers taken the people of thst section to task, but private citizens from different parts of the State have written arhHes condemning this action of supposedly civilised men One such article from Barnwell appeared in the Cotumbu State, the wnter calling at tention to the fact that "a rural police fry who was acting as Sheriff Moms' deputy when Austin was captured, is carrying around fragments of Austin i body, and exhibiting them much to the diagust of many of our citizens " We heard that such was the case, but having no desire whatever to aee such gruesome reminders of s tragedy that has stirred the State we did no tavail our self of the opportunity to see the sou venirs, as some have seen fit to term them We are moet reliably informed that the rural policeman in 'juestion was not Sheriff Moms drputv but »at merely aaamting in the hunt a* a rru-m bee of the posse Mr Momt deplores the alleged exhibition, but rertslnly no blame can attach to him by reason of it The Hampton (iuardian. in an rdi tonal last week, defends the town of Hampton, saying that at least T5 per cant of the mob wax computed of men from other parts of the State If this assertion be true and no attempt ha<t been made to disprove it it is a tad commentary on the civilization of the Stats as a whole A lady writer In one of our exchange* suggests thst the members of the mob be deported to a heathen land and mis stonanes sent to convert them. They should be deported, perhaps, but if the present day schools and churches of the State have not already instilled in them some religious scruples and a re gard for decency, it would be folly to expect a few missionaries to accomplish anything. But enough has already been written and printed about this spectacle at Hampton and a blot has been put upon that county and the State as a whole that it will take years to remove. All decent people deplore it and reams of paper and tons of ink will not make those who glory in such affairs see the errors of their ways. The proposed trip of the editors to gay and giddy Gotham as a climax to the meeting of the South Carolina Press Asspaiation at the Isle of palms this month has been called off. Caused, no doubt, by the failure of the dear delin quent subscribers to pay what they just ly owe. It takes money to make the mare go and by the same token steamship reservations cannot be bought with promises to pay, as so many newspapers are. We wonder sometimes if we will even be able to meet with the other brethren on the Island and hear Editor Knight on the subject of free railroad p«*»es. Uertainly we should hate to forego such a treat, but it looks now like if we get there at all it will only be by the grace of the said so-called fre^ The firing of pistols to give the alarm of fire la rather a bed practise. There are so mahy reckless persons who in firing might hit somebody.—Allendale Herald. The very idea of such a thing,Brother Bradham! You surely don't mean that your much touted “tri-county metro polis” is without adequate fire protec tion, to say nothing of a more modern way of giving the alarm. Surely, surely Seiglingville’s suburb is not still in that class of towns that use the antiquated method of firing pistols*and guns. People who would never think of walking into a store and asking the merchant to give them a spool of thread or a paper of pins think nothing of going into a newspaper office and asking for a copy of the paper, wfiich is merely a part of the publisher’s stock in trade. But such things happen with us almost weekly. If the paper is worth reading it is worth paying for. Surely “the la borer is worthy of his hire.” When one thinks of the number of lovely graduates coming forth this year from our state colleges, one thinks of roses and pies, and such things, too.— Charleston Evening Post. It may be true that the ordinary Char leston girl reminds one of such prosaic things as pies, but when it comes to the Barnwell variety one has visions of sn- gel food, nectar of the gods and— and— “sich like." Help! Overcoats were very much in evi dence here this week, while straw hats were conspicuous by their absence. to propnriv install a job of plumbing My work la GUARANTEED—“not bet ter than the bent but a little better than the rest."
