The young men of Barnwell gave a dance in the Masonic Hall Monday night complimentary to Misses Virginia Jones and Nell Pilcher, of Augusta, who are the guests of Miss Annie Jackson. They stopped over in Columbia for a vis it to Mrs. Lena Davies, at Columbia College. Mr. A. S. Hartzog, a former citizen of Bamberg, was elected a member of the city council of Greenwood lafd week.— Bamberg County Times. Mr. Hartzog is also a former citizen of Barnwell and his friends here will be glad to learn of his continued popu larity in his adopted home. Mr. Eugene B. McSweeney, editpr of the Hampton Guardian, was in towu this week on a visit to friends. Mr. McSweeney has placed an order for a Model 8 Linotype machine and intends to give the people of his section an ttp- to-date newspaper in every respect. The editor of The PeopW was very glad indeed to make his acquaintance. Misses Virginia Jones and Nell Pil cher, of Augusta, who have been spend ing some time with Miss Annie Jack- son, have been the recipients of sev eral social honors during the pastweek. Miss Jackson entertained in their hon or Friday afternoon, and this was fol lowed that evening by a dance given by Mrs. Gladys Brown Towles at the handsome residence of her aunt, Mrs. P. J. Drew, on Marlboro Avenue. I he 1 w in City Telegram, published jiB I he Decaturs, Ala., under date id April 29, had the Tollow ing news item that will he of interest to Barn well County readers, for the reason that Mr. McMillan was.formerly of this oouutv, being a son of Mr. J. C. McMillan, of rimer: C. McMillan was yesterday appointed post master of New Decatur and it is thought the appointment will be con firmed by the Senate today. The first news of the appointment was received here about 4 o'clock yesterday after noon by Lamar Penny, local represen tative of a bonding company, who re ceived a message from the company’s Washington representative, advising him that the appointment had been made. ELECTRIC LIGHTS TURNED ON? Work of Inpt&llinf Water Main i* Also Progressing Very Nicely. There have been so many promises as to when the new electric plant would begin operation that Barnwell folks have decided that they will have to be shown before they believe any morel It was,’ however, stated on Tuesday that the current would be turned on last night for the purpose of testing out the plant. This will be welcome news to those who have had their houses wired and who naturally want to see the lights burning. The work of putting down the water pipes is progressing very well indeed, the large force of hands having already practically finished the Main Street Patterson entertained a number of, line. The work will be pushed to com- Mr*. Caitm Jo**ptufM M«lkcA*mp. Mrs. Came Josephine Mellichamp, beloved wife of Mr. H. S. Mellichamp, of Barnwell, died at the home of her brother, Mr. J. M. Easterling last Thursday morning, aged 52 years. She has been in,, ill health for some time and her death was not entirely unexpected. Last summer she suf fered an attack of typhoid fever and although a number of doctors used their skill in attempts to restore her health she never fully recovered from the effects of her illness. Mrs. Mellichamp was a daughter of the late Mr. Henry Easterling and Mrs. Lucy Easterling. In 1892 she became a member of the Williston Baptist Church and the patient fortitude with which see bore her sufferings proved that she was a true Christian woman, and that her death was merely a trans ition from her couch of suffering into the world of eternal peace. On Friday morning her body was laid to rest in Bonnie Doon Cemetery, which is a few miles from town, the Rev. W. L. Hayes, pastor of the Barn well Baptist Church, conducting the funeral services in the presence of a large concourse of sorrowing relatives and friends. The pall bearers were: Messrs. P. M. Buckingham, Charlie Brown, R. C. Holman, John K. Snell- ing, C. C. Simms, and T. S. Cave. Mrs. Mellichamp is survived by. her husband, one sister, Mrs. W. W. Snell- ing, of Lowell. Fla.,and three brothers, Messrs. J. M. Easterling and B. L. Easterling, of Barnwell, and George W. Easterling, of Ocala, Fla, To them is extended the sympathy of the entire comm u nit v. Notice is hereby given that an elfc- tion will be held in the town, of Black ville on Tuesday, May 6th. 1913, for the purpose of electing a trustee to fill the vacancy caused by the expiration of the commission of G. A. Still as a trustee of the Blackville High School district. No. 19. The said election shall be conducted as is provided by the Statutes at large for conducting General elections.
