Asparagus Prices Satisfactory.
Mr. Horace J. Crouch, County Super
intendent of Education, stated last
week that he received 119.50, net, for
30 half bunches of asparagus that he
shipped to Aiken on the 25tty ult. The
warm w’eather of last week caused the
"grass” ,to mature rapidly and a quan
tity was shipped. All brought satisfac
tory prices. The prices paid so far
this year have been exceptionally good,
this being due in a great measure to
the early date of shipment.
Dr. J. P. Lee, Jr., of Williston, who
Mr W. L. Bates.
Mr. W. L. Bates died very suddenly
from heart Ia2ure at his home near
Dunbarton Tuesday morning about 11
o'clock. He bad left the house, appa
rently in his usual good health, and
had gone ool into a field to cut some
wood. After he had finished, he sat down
on a stumpAo rest and it was fhere that
the Grim Reaper claimed him. When
found by members of his family he had
breathed his last and in the stiffening
fingers theaxe was tightly clenched.
Mr. Bates had long been a consistent
member of the Baptist Church and a
better man never lived. , His was a
kindly disposition and the community
in which he lived so long and so worth
ily is a h«a>'y loser by his death. A
devoted husband, a kindly and loving
father, a true friend has passed from
mortal sight but his memory will re
main fragrant in the hearts of those
who knew and loved him. Verily, he
was one of God’s noblemen.
Mr. Baibk is survived by his wife,
who was Miss Ida Baughman, of Dun
barton, one daughter, Mrs. B. M.
Whaley, wf. Dunbarton, two sons, Mes
srs. J. Walter Bates, af Allendale, and
L. F. Bates, of near Dunbarton, one
sister, Mrs. Bell All, of near Williston,
and one brother, Mr. M. N. Bates, of
Blackville. To these the sincere sym
pathy of.a host of friends is extended
in their dark hour of ssrrow.
