Lynch Law.
The opponent* of lynch law, and
these Include all law-abiding citizens,
will find a strong argument in the
lynching last woek at Houston, Mi-s.,
of two negroes for the same crime.
The body of Mrs. J, C. Williams was
found In a pit under her bouse. She
had been clubbed to death and stripped
of a diamond ring and other jewelry.
The crime occured Thursday. Andrew
Williams, a negro, was arrested ami
charged with the crime. A mob took
him from the jail ami hanged him
Friday. The same night Divel Rucker
another negro and an euiplove of Mrs.
Williams' father, was arrested and
hidden by the sherltf. He was found
by a mot>, taken from the oflh-erv the
official < ourt stenographer aummond
to take lilt testimony, and after con
fessing to the crime in tne pre.euce of
|*er»on», was condemned to
death He w*» chained to a steel
pump In the Court House >ar.|, oil-
aoaked wood piled about him and
whlla the officers of the law looked on,
powerltki to prevent, be was burned
to death, in his confession Rucker
declared that Williams was guiltless
of tba murder of the white woman.
That Is the trouble with lynch law
and mob rule, and this lncide.it should
serve. In a measure at least, to cool the
most ardent advocates of Judge Lynch
A mob la usually composed of a crowd

raeh took the law Into their hands, an
Innocent human being was foully
murdered (there can be no other name
for It.) It matter* not what his color,
he has a right to the protection of the
law. Had cooler beads been able to
dominate the situation, who doubts
that a speedy trial and conviction,
would have followed*the confession of
Rucker, and justice would hav? been

The Corn Show Is Still Open.
Those who have not alreatK availed
themselves of the opportunity to at
tend the Fifth National Ut.rn Expo
sition in Columbia have been given a
few days of grace, and we urge every
one who can to go up to Columbia this
week and see this great agricultural
exhibit. Under influence brought to
bear last week, the powers that be de
cided that thev would continue the ex
position until Friday night of this
week. Everything will remain intact
and the belated ones will see and learn
just as much as did those who attend
ed earlier. You won’t begrudge the
little time and money that it will cost
you to spend a day or two at the show.

look* tike there was "much ado about

note that ont* result of the trial is that
the Beaches and some of their friends
have sold their Aiken property and
from this it is presumed that thev will
no longer spend their winters at that
resort. If this is true, Aiken will lose
more than she will gain by the affair.

Little Lady Can Can.
While at the Augusta corn show we
saw the exhibit made by the Girls’
Canning club. Among then whs the
display of Lillie May Dubose, of Aik
en, S. C. She pm up 1,492 quarts of
canned goods from one-temh of an
acre, and waa awarded prizes amount
ing to $7 LOO. But leaving toe prize
feature out of the question, the canned
goods were worth 4,.L This Is
equivalent to |siL00 per acre. Of
course this includes the trouble and
expense of canning the tomatoes and
beans; but it goes to show the value '
of putting our products Into ttis prop
er conditions to bring a good price.
These tomatoe* uncanned might not
have brought upon the Aiken market
more than $1 s.(hi, or there may not
have been any salt* for them at all.
These canning clubs have a double
value; they teach the girls how both
to produce and to oreserve for future
use. Some farmers complain that they
can not sell oat* and corn for money
like they can cotton ; tint if they w ill
learn to put these oats and corn into
chicken*, pigs and fine cattle they can
sell them at a double profit. —Southern

Barnwell, S. C. Feb. U), 1913.
Editor Barnwell People:—
Having made the
the second visit to the 5th National
Corn Show, and spending the larger
portion of five days on the grounds,
I feel that I am justified in urging every
one, especially the farmers, to visit the
show before the close.
The officials have decided to continue
it this week. The purpose of my last
visit was to attend the meeting of the
Farm Demonstration Agents held there
instead of holding it later af Clemson
College.
The more any one sees of the ex
hibits the more he is impressed with
the vastness of the show. Every
phase of production and conservation
is stressed.
It is educational in every way. I
urge, you Mr. Farmer, to stop working
long enough to go up and get your
brains busy.
Yours truly,
A. M. Sanders, Local Agt.
