John Felder, a negro, waa brutal-

But later In the night the guard

a abort distance from the town. Re

posed the little lynching party that
did the night’s work.
Reporta aay that the negro's fi
nancial troubles bad nothing to do
with the lynching, as that matter
bad been settled. It Is also stated
that Felder had had some words with
a white man. From the reports ob
trincd from all sources. It appears
taat some man or men had a griev
ance, of just what magnitude is not
knoan, against John Felder, and that
it or they took advantage of the oc
casion of his incarceration, drove into
the little town of Norway, .secured
bia or' their victim, then proceeded
with the usual mob ceremonies, with

Inaccessible Rocks, Big Tide and
Northwest Gale Prevent Landing
of Captain and Twenty-seven Men
All of Whom Were Lost Except the
Second Mate and Four Men.
Twenty-two of the tweny-seven
members of the crew of the Furness
Line steamer Florence, bound from
Halifax, N. S., to St. Johns, lost their
lives Jn the wreck of the vessel on
the Jedgea west of St. Shotta during
a gale last Friday. Five survivors,
who reached land In a boat brought
the news to Trepassy Sunday night.
The steamer carried no passengers.
Capt. Barr, of the steamec. and „
all his men reached shore after the
vessel struck, but the Inaccessible
cliffs of St. Shotts prevented their
escape. The big tide, backed up by
the northwest gale, made it Impos
sible to remain there and all hands
were obliged to put back to the ship.
Capt. Barr felt confident that the
wind would go down, but Second
Mate J. Medley volunteered to take
ft ur men In one of tbe ship’s boats
and seek a more favorable landing
place further along th*- coast. In th.*
heavy seas the captain was unwilling
to risk more Uvea and gave his con
st nf to the second mate's expedition.
With great difficulty Medley pllnt-
ed his boat along the coast until he
saw a break lu the rugc-d ltn*< of
cliffs Rolnting the nose directly in
to the surf he avoided the outlying
rocks at d on the crest of a great
b’caker tan in without being upset.
Tumbling out hastily to prevent
'hemsi-lves from being s icked back
by the undertow, the mate and his
four men dragged their boat up tbe
beach and made their wav back along
the cliff, wh-re the steamer lay.
The wind 3nd sea in the meantime
had Increased The combers broke
continuously over the decks of the
vessel, which was grinding heavily
on the Jagged rocks. Medley and his
men search-d In va'n for some path
by which the cliff might he scal'd or
