This Is the Record He Made m s
Senator From Newberry County
Some Years Ago.
Several years ago a bill was Intro
duced in the legislature by C. I’. San
ders, a member of the House from a
county, which would prohibit the op
eration of bucket-shops In the State.
In the Senate Senator H. li. Carlisle
championed the bill. Cole L. Blease
was its leading antagonist.
This bill was of vital Interest to
the farmers of the State who raise
cotton. It puts an end to the specu
lation through the bucket-shops and
every farmer in the State was speei-i
ally anxious to have the measure
passed. Practically all planters in
South Carolina were in favor of the!
bill, except those who had dealings
with the bucket-shops. j
But Governor Please opposed khe.
bill, championing the bucket-shops
and their cause. The following-cee-;
ord, taken from the Senate Journal,
shows wherein Gov. Blease fought
the measure, which was lost, but
passed subsequently when introduo- 1

Addressing a large crowd from the

Blease undertook, as he hlmaelf said,
to make the Jones men and newspa-
per men sick, to nauseate ^hem. To
that end he vilified the respectable
citizens of Spartanburg, employing
the language of the gutter; applied
coarse epithets to the editors of the
Columbia State and The Herald and
those associated with them; attempt

promised to pardon any convict from

of the county asked him to pardon.

Major Richardson and Dr. Butler
Drawing Good Halarles From the
Institution.
To the Editor of The State:
The 30-day suspension of the Con
federate veteran, Samuel F. Massey,
from the old soldiers' home on the
7th Inst, by order of ‘TI. W. Richard
son, chairman and treasurer,” seems
to have grown out of the public
charge by Mr. Massey that Maj. Hal
Richardson was using his official po
sition -to try to force votes at the in
stitution for Gov. Blease. But the
incident compels inquiry as to the
major's authority as "chairman" and
his office as "treasurer". I’pon in
vestigation of the law and of the ex
penditures on the Home by Maj.
icbardson, 1 find a situation which
seems to be a flagrant violation of
law and misuse of public funds. It
certainly calls for publicity and for
explanation by the authorities. "
The act of 1908 establishing the
Confederate infirmary provides for a
commission of five to establish and
manage the institution, and further
specifically provides: "That the mem
bers of said commission shall receive
no compensation for their services
