' Profit in Poultry,
From the Fort M||1 Times of last
week we get the following facts and
llgnrea as to tbe chicken farm of B. M
Dec. two miles from that town, York
county, 8. C:
On Mr. Doe’s farm only Single Comb
White Leghorns are bred and during
tbe two years he ba* been In the beai-
ness be baa shipped hatching eggs and
fowls to every 8tate east of rhelilMla-
slppi river and as far west as Indiana
and Texas. 8ince January 1 his tout
sales of eggs and fowls has amounted
to 8491.35 and he now has In pens 800
smai: chickens and 115 yearling bens.
During the last Ivo months 1.595 chicks
have been batched and 648 rhlpped
fresh from the shell to distant point*,
this being possible from the fact that
for the first three days baby ehteks did
not need either food or water.
The bfgbeat price Mr. Dec ha* re
ceived for a ben was $5. tbe the lowest
fl. He has received as much as 7 cents
each for eggs and has sold table egg«
as low as 26 cent* tbe dozen. From
January 1 to June 10, 119 hens on Mr
Dee’s farm have laid over 13.000 eggs
and they are still laying regularly.
He says that there Is 100 percent profit
in the poultry business each season if
the baby chicks can be raised to ma
turity, otherwise the profit dwindles
to nothing. Mr. Lee has 17 fowl bouses
on bis farm, not one of which was
closed during the winter, thereby es
tablishing his contention that one of
the best aids to growing chickens D
sunshine and fre>h air.
Ctevgy Clarlle Brown again made
good hi* title to that deserved prefix
by bringing us on Tue*dav a wonder
ful biincb of temptingly blushing rose

In bis charge to the Grand Jury last

** Perhaps more enfferlog has been
entailed upon the human race by the
uee of Infoxlcanta than from any other
one cause, and tbe law making powers
of all civilized countries have exhaust

They can not abolish them, any more

they will commit larceny, and they will

Seldom Is tbe second thought given
to the common house fly. It his al
ways been considered a nuisance, but
recent studies have shown it to be very
much more th»n a mere nuDanee. The
germswf Intestinal and tiltb disease*
*re readily carried In large numbers
from the excreta of patients suffering
from typhoid, dysentery and cholera
direct to food In’ended tor human con
sumption and even to tbe finger* and
face and lips of a babe or sleeping
person.
Flies breed In filth and offal of any
kind, preferring above all else the
fresh dropping* of horses and mules.
Large numbers will develop in human
excrement aud in garbage barrels, at
place* where di*b water is thrown out
and wherever decaying animat or vege
table mutter occur*.
The adult files are constantly passing
bark and forth from snch materials,
where they deposit their eggs, to other
materials upon which they themselves
fed. They prefer sweets, but are at-
tacted by almost any kind of human
food.
Kile* do not ordinarily travel to any
great distance and if a little care Is
taken their numbers n»av be greatly
reduced. Especially d-»es the farmer
have the chance of abating the pest so
far as his own premises are concerned.
Th« eggs laid by flics hatch in
about a day Into ti e familiar white
maggots. After about five days spent
feeding. If tbe food supply is unlimited
and a couple of days In s resting stage,
the adult flies appear It takes them
sllghdy more than a week from fly to
fly. It manure can be disposed of,
hauled to either the Held or a compost
Heap some dirts nee from tbe house
every five to seven days, no file# will
be able to develop If It Is not possible
to thus dispose of tbs manure. It may
be possible to provide a room, dark and
thoioughly screened, Into which the
manure may be pnt until It owfi he dis
posed of.
Of all the substance* used to kill or
rope) flies tbe one which has proven
most satisfactory Is ordinary air slack
ed llroc. Lime Is a first class deodo
rant. A free use of it around all
•tables, privies and garbage can* will
cause those places to lose half of tbelr
disagreeable features, and they will
cease to he attractions and breeding
places for that menace to health—the
common bouse fly.
