She let him down easy, and he returned home feeling quite cliirky. It was only when he drove Into Id* yard and found live of the children I lulling hair on the grass that a chill came over him. Dare he ever pop the question and own up to the seven? 'Hint night, after the children had fought themselves to bid and to steep, the deacon got out pon and paper and wrote a letter to the woman whom he had seen a few hour* before. He told „f his situation very truthfully until he came to the nnndior of Ids children, lie dared not admit tu seveu. It was deception to say "several,” but he de ceived. "A widower with several in teresting children.” he put it. and ear ly next morning lie gave it to a pass ing farmer to mail. Only two hour* had gone by. and the children had had but one free for all scrap, when Ids heels suddenly lifted from the ground. S11 ppo.se his letter led the widow to saying yes. She must then know that lie had seven* instead of several children, and what would be the result? She would claim decop lion and probably sue lifm for dam ages. His own letter would convict him. It was a warm May day. but tlu deacon shivered. Half an hour later he was driving to S.uuidorsvllle again. Hi* letter to the widow would reach there at 3 o'clock in tho afternoon, and he must get hold of it. It was a very nervy thing for the deacon to go to the |>ostoftice at th< proper hour and Inquire for mail for the Widow Hastings, hut he had work ed up Ids courage and the postmis tress happened to be umisually busy and so Hie letter was handed out and he started for home. An hour after his doing so the widow herself ap peared at the office and asked for mall and wn* fold that a letter had been handed out. To one haviiif; that natural bent of mind the journalism of the future will £ive a most inviting field, (ireat crops of wealth may not be made therein, but usefulness to humanity is worth more to the heart and the hope than the riches that take winys and fly away. In tloinjr as one best can that work for which he has the love that lasts from fint to the final work hours of one’s span of existence there is a happiness that can neither be lost or taken away. Hut the interests and achievements of today are of larger interest than the traditions of yesterday and the great expectations of tomor row. So. before a^ain taking a hick seat wc will recite briefly the lesson learned slowly through nearly a third of a century of editorial schooling. And wc pay our respects first to that much misunderstood and frequently scolded person, the delinquent subscriber. He or she is a very numerouAIndividual in thisrStute excepting in the counties of York, Spartanburg, -Newberry and Hambcrg, where he and she have been converter! to a different way of thought and conduct. The existence of the delinquent subscriber as a constant epidemic is largelv chargeable, in this ultra commercial period, to the attempted combination of business and profession, that will no more mix than oil aml-wat*rf, for no man or wam3.tLcan„s?rvc two masters. There has been a long lasting and wide spread and tinfortunaTeTy~Truc. pro- tem, theory that the newspaper must rely upon advertising patronage for sufficient revenue to pay its expenses and keep the wolf from the sanctum door, while subscription jayments may be counted on to furnish pocket change. The advertiser makes the quantity and not the quality of circulation the measure of patronag* .and standard of., price, and the publisher too often kotows, giving the merchant of medicine maker the best display, position and price. The delinquefi{ subscriber, though he may never have set fopt in a prim shop, recognizes in the “make up” the littleness of consideration for him or herself and the largeness of- the esteem in .atrhich Col.
