A CHINESE STORY.
De-

Two women came before a mandarin
In China, each of them protesting thnt
she was tho motber of n little child
they had brought with them. They
were so eager and ao positive thnt the
mandarin wn* sorely puzzled. He re
tired to eonault with his wife, who
was a wise nnd clever woman, whose
opinion wn* held in grvnt repute In
the neighborhood. She requested five
minute* In which to deliberate. At the
end of thnt time she spoke, 'T^t the
servant* entrb me a large fish In the
river, and let It be brought here alive.'’
This was done. ‘'T.rlng mo now tho
Infant,” Hhe said, "but leave the two
women In the onter chamber.” This
was done too. Then the mandarin's
wife cmwed the baby to be undressed
nnd It* clothes to bo put on the fish.
“Carry the creature outside now nnd
throw It Into the river In the sight of
tho two women." The servant obeyed
her ordere, flinging the fluh Into the
water, where It rolled about nud strug
gled, disgusted no doubt by the wrap
pings In which it was swaddled.
Without « moment's pause one of the
women threw herself Into the river
with a shriek. She must save her
drowning child. "Without doubt Bin*
I* tho true mother,” she declared, nnd
the mandarin's wife commanded that
she should be rescued and the child
given to her. And the mandarin nod
ded Iris head and thought his wife (lie

crept away. She was found out In her
Imposture, and (lie mnndarian'R wife
