I was not raised on a farm and have never pulled a bell cord over * mule, but from childhood the gar den ha* been as popular at my home a* «he flower yard. 1 have liked rihe'rx erd*e of preparing the soil, planting the seeds and working the young I'lant*. mid there is to me a constant and increasing pleasure in gathering fresh vegetable* and small truit* to make fny own table look like living and share the surplus with neighbor* and friend* who are too busy to gar den or whose energies work on other line*. I have learned what I know about gardening from reading book* and farm papers and then putting these theories to the ten of the try rule. I think the best investment of a dollar gardener can make is in buying I’rof. New man’* book . A* he has planted at Glemsoti College and Atlanta hi* teach ings do not make a close lit to our soil and season*, but a littfl* common sense ami experience will adjust hi* ideas to our need* and circumstance*. What I write is baced on and backed hy my experience, and while I don’t claim to be an expert I give these fact* with Hie hope that they may lie of benefit to other*. Second crop Irish potatoes are hard to raise, but they are worth all the time and trouble nqulr-ed to make them. Thi* month i* the time to make ready the land and plant them. Good preparation of the soil is half the bat tie. Have the land thoroughly and deeply broken by plow or spade. Lay off deep furrows. Get tbe small pota toes out of tbe patch from which vou are now eating. Don’t let the sun shine on them any length of time I’lant them whole in the furrow, Acovee Mvo or three inches deep and walk on them so that the ground above them will be firm. After they come up work the aoil Into the furrow until it l# full, then cultivate ou a TeveU I am also planting lohiato seed, and lima beans for fall use. They will do wvdl If gfvyn a- good showing I haye tried putting out tomato cutting*, but with poor success. If the top of the ground around them get* dry before they take root they die a* quickly a* if Hie cutworm had circled them. The lima beans planted now on good land ■will bear until frost.
