THAT TENNESSEE TRIAL.
The most engrossing murder trial in
the South for many years enued bn
Saturday in Nashville. Tenn. Col.
Duncan Cooper, hi* son Robin and
Rx Sheriff J. I). Sharp were tried for
the murder of E. W. Carmack, forrper
United States Senator and at the time
of bla death editor of the Tennesseean
newspaper. Duncan Cooper and Car
mack had been close friends years ago,
but politics separated them. Car
mack's editorial* so angered Cooper
that a street pistol duel followed, Car
mack was shot dead by Robin Cooper,
who wag himself slightly wounded,
The jury acquitted Sharp, but found
Demean and RoWti Cooper guilty In
the second degree and Bleed thefr
punishment at .twenty years In the
penitentiary. They were released on
$25 ,000 bond pending moHun for new
trial and appeal to the Supreme Court.
Though the trouble came from the
caustic editorials of a brilliant writer
the petit jury was made up of plain
men who have never been newspaper
reader*. Some of them were unable to
read at all. Non* of them hat} jead any
account of the killing of Carmack, Yet
