LONG BRANCH PHILOSOPHY.
Who struck® Billy P.tterson I* a
question that has never (so far as our
information goes) been answered, tin
when our candidates get on tlie stump
and out into private conversation,
making promises and teMng us about
what our great needs are and we in
turn are expected t<> take off our coats
during the tieated cawipnign and u»e
cm* words and even light if needs he
for the success of office seeker*, all
during election year.
We find ourselves bv this time of
year entirely weaned, as it were, there
being nothing more expected of us at
present*and rhe pa<t being forgotten,
as much as to say * between the plow
handle* Is a- high as you will ever be
allowejl to,rise.” No we must content
with pulling the hell cord over a mules
hack taking in the drily spring-
whiffs of high priced fcrtiluer and
the fear of entering into another whirl-
poo' of ruin and disappointment which
will »urelv come if the poor and needy
are expected to give two lb*, of cotton
foi one of bacon. And to mend th-
matter a bit of class legislation to cut
out the small fry and let tlie Big Fish
finish swallowing the last minnow in
the universe and nobody to btame for
it, and so we conclude with a certaintly
that B.illy Patterson was struck, am!
we know what he was struck for, but
can’t find out w ho hit him.
