TCKMXG A NEW LEAF. • From a recent speech of t’ol. Luther A. Ransom, formerly of Aike.i, now of Atlanta, we take and com mend to our farm r friend* the following extract. Dob Ransom is a recognized authority on fertilizers, and one of the best all round men ever born. Ho said : “Tbo English and Danish feeders consider tbe use of meal as a fertilizer a most wasteful, extravagant practice. “IvtiglBsh chemists have deteiiniiietl by actual results that the droppings from cattle fed on cottonseed meal arc practically equal in value to the meal itself lor fertilizer |>urposi;»- Therefore they convert the cow into a fertilizer factory and sell th" factory at a profit. There I* no farmer in this audience who-does not own land sufficient on which to feed a few cattle, and if thi* practice was followed all of the meal manufactured in Georgia, instead of being exported would he used in this w ay and the Income from the product greatly merea-ed. “While meal I*, therefore, a good fer tiMzor,.U I* a costlv otie w hen used l>v itself and is not^w hat a chemist would consider a well balanced fertilizer. Actual practice and analyses have demonstrated that a commercial fer tiilzer averaging 8 per cent of avail able phosphoric acid. 2 per cent of ammonia and 2 per cent potash, or 10 per cent available phosphoric acid, 2 per cent aiAmnni* and 2 per cent jmt- ash I* the best material for leriilizmg crop* ir.
