At present most cf tbe stock food manufacturers base tbeir claims for patronage on the alleged vilue of the compounds as condiments and medi cines. Tbe mystery and popular Ignorance concerning medical practice make Its more secure field In which to exploit fictitious claims. The first ste^ in tbls will be to ascer tain just wbat these powders contain. International Stock Food contains wheat feed, cayenne, salt, obaroosi and some bitter drug; Massachusetts, Bulletin, No. 71, saya It contains wheat effal, pepper, salt, charcoal and some material rich In protein, and the December Bulletin of tbe North Carolina Department of Agriculture aays It consists of wheat bran, red pepper, obareqal and linseed meal. It will be noticed tbat all agree that a wheat produot of some sort is tbe principal ingredient. Pepper and obaiooal are also found by ah three; while salt and a material rich in pro tein—linseed meal by North Carolina —are found by two, and a bitter drug I one. This is, luueed, a remarkable unanimity of reeulrfk We are now in a poeltlon to judge of the accuracy of tbe claims made for these compounds. There are two ways of doing that. First, after tbe chemist and the miorosoopist have told ui the ingredients tbey contain, the medical man may judge of their value or eff dt, when used m medical praotiot; from his knowledge of msdl oal science.' Judged on tbls basis, we give it as our professional opinion that wheat bran, salt, pepper, char coal, etc., possess no marked medlol nal virtue for either prevention or cure of diseases; but If any one does not care to accept our opinion, we ask him to go to his family physician, In whom be bas ooufldenoe, and ask him if these substances ,are of much value as medicines, and we are willing to abide by nls reply. Toe second method of Judging of the va ue of these condl mental stock or condition powders is by ad tual trials or feeding tests, but it may be stated that no trial Is either prac tical or worthy the name Of a test unless tbe food and tbe animals, are both weighed, and unless another lot jf anlmais of the same quality, age, die tod condition, and kept and other wise fed in the same manner, are compared with those received the con dlmtntal foods. Fortunately, several "Standard Stock Food." The lot showing tbe second lowest net profit had received “International Stock Food."
