in 1881 (perhaps this was his next visit
to the city, after his wagon trip,) he

Conference.
On one of bis yearly visits to the
Barnwell farm, he pointed to the re
mains of an old log, and said to a
friend,-‘Onee, when ahoy, 1 jumped
over that log, to light on a pile of
leaves. My good old aunt said to me’
‘Holland, you ought not to have done
that; there might havr been a snake
under the leaves,’-! think of that very
often. When holding Conference, If i
feel like jumping on a pile of leaves, I
think a snake juay be there!

On Sunday last a large congregation

Tho Columbia Baptist Church was re
organized as the fruits of the services
that have been held there by Bro. Brit
ton, a missionary of Hie State Board.
It is sincerely hoped that this lump
of leaven may permeate the whole
neighborhood and be the means of
bringing the lost to a knowledge of
Saviour’s love.

on recommendation of Governor Hey
ward the Legislature oireated a board
of pardons, whlch^ the Governor
promptly filled by the appointment of
R. W. Hband. lawyer, of Columbia, for
three years; Wilson G. Harvey of
Charleston, bank president, for’two
years and R. Mays Cleveland, fanner,
of Greenville, for one year. Each
member gets $4 per day for not more
than 20 days in each year.

General Assembly :

school buildings, maximum interest 6
per cent.
To authorize an- election In Allen
dale on the question of issuing for
school and municipal purposes $20,-
000 thirty yfcar bonds, interest nor to
exceed C per cent.

To reduce the-oumbor of trustees of;
tho Barnwell Graded School District to
seven, and to change the date of their
election to May 15tli.

The LegDIature^djourned sine die
between three and four o’clock Sunday
morning, after a full session of forty
days. The work accomplished was
mostly of a local cliaraidm^, amliori-
zing the issuing of bonds for school
buildings, and for taking up old bonds,
granting railroad charters and raising
a few salaries. No change was made
in the Dispensary law. The House of
Representative# Insisted- on the aboli
tion of the State Dispensary It Colum
bia while the Senate favored and stood
to its retention, so nothing was done.
W. O. Tatum of Orangeburg was
unanimously reelected State Liquor
Commissioner. J. M. Rawlinton, a
farmer and member bf the House from
Richland County, was elected Chair
man of the State Board of Control, re
ceiving 103 votes against 33 given to
H. H. Evans, Chairman for several
years Major John Black of Colum
bia, formerly of C’oileton, and Mr.
John B. Wylie of Chester were elected
the oilier member# of tbe State Board.
The Legislature was pretty liberal in
appropriations. Confederate pension
ers are to receive $225,000; for an ex
