quest on Saturday, Dr. R. C. Kirkland

tion.
The Inquiry was continued until
Monday wirsn over a hundred good
citizens assembled. . Solicitor Dayis
was present and made an address coun
selling trust An and obedience to the
law. Upon the motion of Dr, W. C.
Smith a vote w.ia Ulwn and it was. the
unanimous spirit of the meeting to rec-
ogulze .ami uphold the aupremaey aod
effectiveness of the law. The inquest
was adjourned until Friday, tomor
row.
Mr. Smith was buried In the Willis-
ton Cemetery on .Sunday, Rev. Mr.
Jamison conducting the religious ser
vices. after which his brothers of the
Knights of Pythias with their beauti
ful and impressive ritual laid his body
to tbe last long rest.
The largo attendance was a testimo
nial mord speaking Ihan words of the
high regard in which he was held, tbe
great sorrow that saddens the doofniu
nity and the heartfelt sympathy given
to his bereaved parents, brothers and
sisters. <
Mr. Smith was about 38 years of age,
a member of one of the best and oldest
families of the county. He had served
aslntendant of Willlsfon for several
terms and was one of the most popular,
progressive and successful citizens.
The relatives of Mr. Smith have of
fered a reward of $2,500, which Gov
ernor Heyward will be asked to sup
plement.
Mrs. J. Allen Tobin and Miss Carrie
Cave remained North after the inaugu
ration of Mr. Roosevelt, to prepare for
the Inauguration of King Fashion, a
greater ruler, in Barnwell.
Mason John Eve, colored, took ad
vantage of fiie inauguration rates to
see Washington and Roosevelt and la
ter to visit his daughter who has been
at school In New Jersey for two years.
The sinking fund couitnis-ton will
meet in Columbia tomorrow and pass
upon applications for loans from many
counties. Barnwell anti Bamberg In
cluded, to enable them to pay as they
go.
Barnwell County farmers are not on
ly reducing cotton acreage and fertili

begin on next Monday and it is thought
that three days will be sufficient for
the trial of the cases to be disposed of
this term,
The Court of Common Pleas, accord-
Ipg-to law, will open on next Wednes
day. There are 35 cases on the Roster,
enough to keep the lawyers and juries
busy. Fifteen cases are damage suit*
against the Southern and Coast Line
Railways. -
