June 19 has remained unanswered
much longer than I intended, but I
have been on a dead run, .besides be
ing away from home a good deal since
it was received, and that must lie my
excuse.
I went to the department of justice
to And out about VonKolnitz’a appli
cation and endorsers. I found that he
had made application for the position
of district attorney shortly after Mc
Kinley's Arst inauguration. but after
he was turned down he has withdrawn
the diapers, so that there was nothing
on Ale. VonKolnitr. undoubtedly
lion of Hanna's committee in several
Northern states, ana it is Hie essence

In the darkness of Uw night It wa*
impuaalble to determine the full ex
tent of damage wrought, but with
the dawn of day Uw stricken village
bad the appearance of the ruins of s
city long deserted. A church had been
lowered to the ground and not one
brick of the building was left standing.
Chimneys toppled over, frame build
ings had been wrenched apart and
thrown from their foundations, tele
graph and telephone wires had been
broken and there was not a building
in town that had not been damaged
more or less seriously. In store
buildings that were totally destroyed
the- merchandise was thrown from
shelves and everything breakable was
destroyed; not a pane of glass was left

frame cottages and dwellings that
were left standing stoves were over
turned and crockery and glassware
were destroyed

half of them women, atteked the Car
men ranch near Hermosillo Saturday

patrol of Mexican troops came to the
rescue two of the women and Ave of
the men lay dead. The Yaquis wwe
weak from hunger and when attacked
by superior numbers they were com
pelled to surrender. Fifteen prison

The colored ministers of Charleston
have entered politics and are carrying
their congregations with them. A
mass meeting was held Wednesday
night in one of the churches which
was addressed by Chairman Deas of
the Republican committee. He de
nounced President Roosevelt for his
appointments. He was especially
grieved over the appointment of Koes-
ter and he took special credit to him
self in having prevented the confirma
tion of Koester. He was thanked by
resolution for his “patrioticservices.'’

The Columbia State says Col. Wille
Jones, State Democratic chairman, ac
companied by Mrs. Jones will leave
Wednesday morning for a stay at
White Sulphur Sprin©i, W. Va. He
has requested Gov.' McSweeoey, who is
the member of the committee from
Hampton county, to act as State
chairman in his absence, and requests
that ail communkations for the com
mittee be addressed to the governor

Charles Craven, the supposed mur *
derer of William H. Wilson, fanner
living near Herndon, Va., was lynch
ed Thursday afternoon on the Pike,,
one mile east of Leesburg, Va- ^He
was taken from the jail at Leesburg by
a mob of 150 men, who overpowered
the guard, broke in the onterdaor ahd
then entered the cage, using hammers'
and crowbars. Little difficulty was
encountered in this work. A noose was
thrown around the prisoner’* neck and
be was led down the pike in the direct
tion of the scene of the murder. The
party bad proceeded scarcely a mile
when the rope was thrown $round a
tree and Craven was pulled from the
ground. As soon ss the body was
raised in the air, the mob Hied fully
500 shots at the dylngman.
