icide were peculiar and in asking the
name of the minister performing the
ceremony our informants gavu us no
hint of the fact of color in correction of
our mistaken impression.
Upon tlis foregoing statement and
our knowledge of how completely the
colored people have separated tliem-
*e!ve» from the white In the matters of
religious services, man iage ceremonies
and funeral observances, ami the fact
that so many have adopted the names
of old owners, the account of the hom
icide was written without a thought of
incorrectness as to the officiating min
ister.
We regret and are mortified more by
our mistake than Mr. Reeves can pos
sibly have been and tender this apolo-
*y as the best amende honorable with
in our povyer. Had wc known nr even
dreamed for an instant that there was
« possibility or suspicion of mistake
