AT THE CAPITAL.
The House of Representatives voted
on Saturday to adjourn on Monday
next, Slit Inst. The Henate will be
w illing to quit work and come home on
that date. That will make a session ot
forty days, the exact length of the rainy
spell In the days of Noah. In the flood
of hills Introduced there has been some
similarity to the down pour of the de- 1
luge, but there will be no disastrous re
sults. The end of the session will find
the- Statute books In about the same
condition they were In at its begin
ning. No great or startling changes
will, from present ^appearances, be
made In any law of Importance.
This has been preeminently a bill
killing session. While there was more
or less merit In many of the measures
Introduced and the speeches and argil
ments in their support were in many
cases of high ability, In tbe cool judg-
lien*; of the majority there was a con^
vlctlon that there was better |H»llcy lu
letting present problems alone than in
venturing upon attempting hasty so-
'ut'on* that might be more harmful
than helpful. It la likely, however,
that the second seashm will bring forth
more and belter f ruit than this has pro
duced.
So many members of both Senate and
House were new men that it has taken
time for them to get their bearings.
As Intelligent men they have learned
much and next January will be far
more effective. It is just the difference
between the volunteers and trained
and seasoned soldiers.
The Birnwcll and Bamberg dele
gations have been diligent and faith
ful. While they have not consumed
much time in speech making they have
been constant at roll call.

relating to the dispensary Senator Ald-
rieff and Representative J. O. Patter-
lion made apeeobe* opposing any pres
ent changes and favoring its fxir trial
for the currentyeai. Senator Mayfield

Runs, Saltkehatchie and other streams,

After a while these now unknown and
unappreciated resources will be discov
ered and utilized, but. as has been gen
erally the case, the profits will proha-

may come within our gates.
We suggest that the teachers of the
higher schools in this territory, who
have some knowledge of gvology and
mineralogy, give acme of their Imlidaya
to examinatiop of tbe nelghborhooda la
which they arc at work. They may
help themaelvet while being of valua
ble asalstance to their communities and
And pleasanter and more profitable oc
cupations. In any event the better
health and treater energy that will
come from the relaxation will be am
ple reward for their labors.
The duties of the professor* of nat
ural science In the several Btate col
lege* might be very profltnbly widened
by requiring them to make examina
tions and analyses of sneh minerals and
imedical water* aa land owner* might
•end them. That would in some meas
ure fill the long fait want of a geologi
cal survey, which the Sute Is not pre
pared now to undertake. It might add
greatly to tbe development of the-rr-
•ource« and wealth of the people and
would yery surely popularise the Bute
