Land so wet early in season you could
not get on It and weeds got the start’/
Drain the land. Then stir the surface,
always on time, with slanting toothed
harrow after planting, and weeder
after crop comes up, etc., etc. If a
weed comes up and grows a few inches
it has robbed your crop, even-if you-
destroy it then. The way we believe
in is to destroy the reed while in the
soil by the stirring of the surface. Kill
it before it gets out of the ground, so
far as is practical. Thousands of farm

potatoes. W here tbe land is very atony
or rough this may be necessary. But
over most of the country weeds can be
kept from growing, and an earth mulch
can be formed very rapidly by horse

desire for souvenirs, have sadly
muitllated the upper portion and one
edge of the slab by clipping off
pieces of the marble. This mutilation
was carried so far as to compleU-ly
destroy tbe curved top of the slab and
to obliterate the litters “ Gen ’’ of the
title and *' ens ’’ of the surname.
Five students were arrested ffl the
act of mutilating the stonb, and to
escape the legal penalty therefor
agreed to pay the expenses of having
the stone properly repaired, and It was
sent here Tor that purpose. '
The stone is of a very hard marble,
and is about four feet long, about two
feet wide and two or three inches
thick. Nearly one-half of its length
was buried in the ground, thus leaving
an abundance of surface for the letter
ing, but as there is not enough space
at the top to replace the obliterated
letters the whole of tbe lettering must
be renewed. A fac-simil* of gibe in

exact copy In order to make tbe re-
lettering as much alike to tba original
