I took a skiff one morning at Gold
Dust Landing, and was rowed out In

SOME COTTON FIGURES.
According to Secretary Hestei\ New
Orleans Cotton Report Issued on the
9th Inst., the supply of new cotton
brought Into sight since Sept. 1st. In
cluding stocks left over at ports and in
terior towns from the last crop,
amounts to 6.285,646 bales, against 6,-
848,488 for tbe same period last year.
Statements of the Department of Ag
riculture at Washington show that
from Sept. 1st 1696 to Feby. 1st 1897 the
total actual movement of cotton to
porta, Northern and Western Mills,
Canada Ac., amounted to 6/17,167 com
mercial bales; mill purchases 509,307
bales; remaining on plantations, at de
pots. compresses Ac., 1.494,329 bales,
not including stocks held at ports.
Tba South Carolina crop is given at
M07 bales, of which 693,493 have
shipped abroad. 902.313 sold to
Roto# uiills. &9.S®1 held by farmers.
